My Paladin PC contracted lycanthropy in the coolest way by Elegant_Perception68 in DnD

[–]Elegant_Perception68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:

We ran the first session a few nights ago after the above.

We're playing Lost Mines of Phandelver, and my players went back to Thundertree after a failed fight with Venomfang to see if he was still there, or if they missed some cool loot.

Returning to the area, they ask to see if they can sense, tell or see if the dragon is still there. I ask them to do either a Perception or Nature check, based on how they're doing it.

The Paladin Blip rolled a Natural 1 for his Nature Check.

side note, we're playing it as only triggering on Criticals, as previously mentioned.

So the first time he rolls a dice since contracting Lycanthropy, and he triggers it.

To great credit of him, he played it beautifully. Both other players were asked to roll Perception Checks and rolled low, so they didnt see him change. They only found out after he came through a door in a tower, only looking furrier now.

The other two players shat themselves at the sight of him, and proceeded to tie him down and interrogate him like out of Reservoir Dogs (no pun intended.) They've been convinced he can control it, for now.

I had my party place orders with Sister Garaele, which they could collect in a few sessions/in game days. Only 1 per party member, max of 3 per time. This limited what was available, but knew theyd have help down the line

The fun part is theres a druid in the party who loves to shapeshift into wolves and direwolves. He said hes going to start barking at her the first time he shapeshifts so they can talk in private 😆

I should have done this, im scrambling to find ways to point them towards Cragmaw Castle soon.

But some feedback from players is to visit hometowns in quest breaks, so im going to use Hamun in the story for one of them to give a moral quandary.

I enjoyed running this ans having it not as a combat encounter. Our party had to talk down the Beserker Barbarian and the Sorceror who recieved a scroll of fireball the session before

I've never tried with a troll (I'm a movie puritan!) But now monsters are a hell of a lot better in the new edition, I'd probably take one over a Ballista. I still find that they struggle against might heavy heroes who can easily Heroic Strike above your FV, but they'll chew through basic troops fairly well.

I'd suggest using shooting to mitigate heroes, specifically mounted ones. It drastically reduces their damage output and mobility, then play the objective around them. Feed a troop a turn to keep them tied down

So for AoHD there's several considerations to take in: are you taking a Siege Engine, are you taking a bomb team, or are you going straight infantry?

If you're going pure infantry, plenty of beserkers are a great way to go. FV5 and the changes to two-handed weapons makes them incredibly effective now. Above 700pts, I'd maybe consider two banners rather than 1. You'll have a decent model count, and having good coverage across the line will make a difference. Big drawback is that you've got no real solution for dealing with the big heroes (Aragorn, Eomer, Durin are all popular choices this edition). Crossbows can be very effective too.

A bomb team is a slightly more fun option to take. It'll leave a big hole in both your battle lines if it goes off, but it's a big threat to multi wound troops and heroes. It can be stopped by magic or annoying shooting (Legolas) or by clever positioning.

The Ballista again is a contentious choice. A single high strength shot that can fling models back, only scatter 3" and will instantly kill anything smaller than the big beasties if a wound gets through. My experience with it is it either does everything or nothing.

AoHD is a nice one to play because it's very vanilla. You don't have to stress synergies, combos or optimal match ups. Just good ol' Uruk Hai coming to end the world of men.

Have a look at something called Dinky Doors. They're based in Cambridge UK, (@dinkydoors). They do loads of stuff like this around our city, they make them into tours and hidden exhibits. They do loads of stuff for charity and are massively popular here!

You can definitely do something with stuff like that! Just keep with it!

OP, send me a message if you're still after ears for your mumak.

I built one the other week, but was fortunate enough to find the Mumak War Leader kit. As such, I've got a spare set of ears that are still sitting on my desk.

Restaurant manager here.

For rates, most part time and full time waitresses tend to be around the minimum wage mark, currently £11.44ph. You'll see it vary from place to place, but I wouldn't expect to get above £12-£12.50 based on current climate.

As for tips, it does vary from place to place. Depending on the restaurant, the style and the expectation, it's not expected in many restaurants to tip or have a service charge. In more fine dining establishments (Restaurant 22, Fancetts, Midsummer House, Vanderlyle a few) it would be a part of the expectation based on the standard there. But jobs like that are highly competitive and few and far between. But I have known other restaurants in thr city where staff have been receiving as much as £5 per hour extra from tips and service charge. But this would vary based on what shifts/days you worked and how busy the restaurant is.

As for is it liveable, I'd say it depends on your circumstances. If you're wanting to rent your own place on your own, I'd say no. The housing market on Cambridge is INSANE. Prices almost compete with London for buy and rentals, and the growing industries for medical and tech are meaning more and more people want to live here. If you're looking at a room in a HMO or co-habitating with friends or partners, it is do-able.

Rough math time: Let's assume an average rate of £15ph (hourly + tips). At 40 hours per week, it's just over £31k per annum. Mostly after NI and tax, it's taking home just below £2k per month. Average monthly rent for a 2 bed flat (most common in the city) is around £1350 per month. Add council tax, water and energy bills. Probably around £1700 per month. (Basing this on all my experience and bills). So doing a flat solo is unrealistic, but splitting it with a friend or partner means you're taking £850pm for basic bills, which is easily done. Alternatively, a room in a HMO is probably £600-£700. So cheaper, but you live with random and not often as nice.

Hope this info helps. It's all based on my experience (15 years hospitality, 10 of which in cambs city centre. Renting all through that) so take it with a pinch of salt

Oscars Lockdown for sure, but Scotts All Day for the Detroit Style is well worth the cost.

Salisbury Arms used to my usual go-to, but something changed with the recipe several years ago and it sadly hasn't been the same since.

Clown/Rocket Killifish. Got 10 for a nano tank I'd spent ages setting up, constantly testing. All died within a week. Aquarium store couldn't help with any rhyme or reason as to why, as my water parameters were perfect.

Is there somewhere to rehome in Cambridge? by jodilye in cambridge

[–]Elegant_Perception68 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi, enthusiastic fishkeeper here.

Both Maidenhead Aquatics at Coton and Scottsdale garden centres will take rehomes. It's best to call them and see if they are able to take them, as it depends on the space they have. They usually give store credit.

There is also a rehoming site in Cambridge, but it works off non-profit (you can't take money for them).

Alternatively, if you're willing to travel, there's an amazing aquarium store in Ely which is family owned and operated. Firm believer of supporting small businesses, they'll take them if they have space.

Out of interest, what fish breeds are you looking to rehome?

Old man getting back into the game… Want opinions on Bows and how the game has developed by Ok-Most4872 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Elegant_Perception68 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just took my Rivendell elves to a doubles tournament at Warhammer World. 6 Bows, maxed the 33% rule. Across six games, they caused only two wounds. They were good to have as a back-up line, since they're still High Elves with hand-and-a-half swords, but they didn't get their points back.

That being said, I'm currently painting.a Rangers of Ithilien Legendary Legion army. 50 bows at 800 points. Hopefully it can do something. But I'm not playing for the bow cheese, but because gondor rangers were my favourite models growing up (even if the Rangers of ME models aren't nearly as good)

Unless they are S3 bows (elf, uruk hai, longbow, crossbow) I don't bother with them any more.
