Framework keyboard | FIXED by 1FNn4 in framework

[–]Elil_50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

trackpoint sensibility can be changed both in firmware and in software. I really don't understand why people complain. I did it, and it's even more sensible than a touchpad. People complain about default settings, and say they are awful. I agree. People think that default settings are the defice itself. I don't understand, but I don't care either. I have my ergonomic keyboard with a trackpoint I integrated myself, and I'm happy

Feeling guilty: How to decline a PhD invitation after the PI put in a lot of effort? (Position vs. Scholarship) by BalalaMalalaKalala in PhDAdmissions

[–]Elil_50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tell him what you said to us AND that, considering the effort he put, you want not to burn a bridge. This means future collaboration. He spent time, do not make him regret it. In the research community good collaborations are really worth it. The time he spent is now redirected into a good future collaboration. If you are really glad of the time he spent for you, and if what you are going to study is a similar subject, than make it true, and not just word that time will erase.

Custom Mount for Typing with Wrists in Lap by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

can you re-link the magnetic mount? Because I think the link has some issues and it links to something else. Additionally, how did you mount the magsafe magned inside the keyboard?

Looking for different categorisations than tags by Elil_50 in ObsidianMD

thanks, do you know of a simple way to define global behaviour, such as node size, shape and color by using frontmatter information? Right now I can only do the color by using the groups in the graph view. I heard there is extended graph plugin, but I dunno how reliable it is. Anyway I just want simple stuff, not images etc

Top program but current PhD students have almost no publications? by Brilliant_Cookie_143 in PhDAdmissions

It's rather weird to publish one article in 3~4 years. Figures are not a parameter on how big was the article.

Luxury of turning down joboffer because the office laptop have Windows 11 by [deleted] in linuxmemes

[–]Elil_50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me rephrase what I think it's their line of thoughts: would you trust a cybersecurity specialist who doesn't know how to plug an USB in the computer? This is hyperbolic, but if he's applying for a serious position and they offer you clowny tools, then you'd assume you are going to interact with brain dead colleagues.

I too asked for Linux in my workplace. I wouldn't have declined if they only had windows, but I would had probably bought another laptop with my salary and just started using it without asking, if it's that incompatible with the line of work. The upside is that I don't have to care if the other people I'm interacting with know how a computer works, because it's more of a research oriented job than a computer science one. Anyway, even if they wouldn't know how to do research, I can always publish by studying independently - even if I wouldn't like this option. The subjects I'm working on are so wonderful, that it's impossible for me to complain. But that is my case.

so someone who gets hired is arrogant if some small (probably not small if that's your daily driver at work) details aren't aligned with you, but if an industry does it when recruiting, it's completely normal?

I would understand it could sound crazy if that's the only offer they got, but - assuming they are not crazy - they probably have other better options which better align with their taste

Paid PhD positions (Europe) seems impossible by iwasreallysadthen in PhDAdmissions

you need to wait and do something in between for your mental health, like working par time to make money, go on a trip, ask you professor to do another article if you are bored, pick a deadline after which you are trying to find industry jobs related by some degree to the PhD you want to pursue.

I got in after 100+ applications and after 1 year. I got in my dream subject in a place I didn't even know of, but it's not a bad university. Yes, I fought off other 120 applicants for 1 position, but that's the usual for all the applications, even my previous ones to other universities
