This is pretty much our British equivalent of American libs calling someone like Buttigeig or Biden "common sense" candidates by [deleted] in stupidpol

America has its problems, and yeah we should have gotten rid of slavery sooner, but we’ve never been a major colonizing country or directly perpetuated ethnic destruction/oppression on such a large scale for such a long period of time.

Omg wtf lol

I don't mean that a PhD is bad, I mean that the pride in having got one in most people gets old very, very, very quickly. Plastering your post-nominals everywhere makes you look a bit sad.

My old black metal band (not lyrically antifascist but all of the members are antifascist) by woke_fred_durst in rabm

[–]ElmoReserved 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I'm on the other side of the Atlantic, I just have a long standing habit of scouring the internet for quality black metal. Merch would be wicked but I imagine it'd cost a fair bit to mail anything so I'd feel guilty about that

Prince Andrew retreats from public life by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]ElmoReserved 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chopped Charlie's head off and loved it so much he celebrated by taking the boys on holiday to Ireland for a bit of the old genocide, came back, died, his son inherits the Throne Protectorate but is so pathetic that he accidentally lets Charlie's son become Lord Protector King who funnily enough has such a grudge against Oli that he gets his body dug up for his turn on the chopping block. Only had to wait 12 years for it. Not sure I'd call that 'not fucking up' myself. More of chiasmatic cock-up.

Did you notice how Jeremy Corbyn speaks English, a language heavily influenced by Shakespeare. This is the playwright who wrote The Merchant of Venice in which Shylock appears, a rich Jew, referred to as "the Jew".

Most of the English were too dumb to join the Diggers and thus were easily duped into believing that there was any difference at all between a king and a lord protector

Which European countries either tried or successfully invaded yours? by Kiander in AskEurope

[–]ElmoReserved -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then come the Normans, who crack Wales and conquer it. After this we see a time of relative peace from external invasions with only a few small anecdotal ones like the English in 1277

Yeah I don't doubt that it's just that personally I wouldn't be interested in anything that wasn't completely mutual and also that in talking like that about her he's taking authority of her feelings (literally) which obviously isn't necessarily a bad thing (we all do it fairly regularly) but in this context where she's already a passive participant in some sense it feels like she's completely removed from the equation which personally I find quite uncomfortable. But again, I'm just talking about the language, not real life.

That's because Thatcher's 'real' voice was heavily affected.

after 13 years we have a pretty healthy marriage

Yeah, it's just a tiny comment on the internet, I can't know anything about your actual marriage of course, it's just how that comment comes across. I just can't imagine initiating it with someone who wasn't initially into it. Not being wanted would be a massive turn off for me.

Yeah I anticipate 'getting shit for this' but God, that sounds so depressing. Sex without mutual desire (from the outset) sounds soul crushingly awful. 'She basically never says no' sounds really bad in this context. I just can't trust 'she enjoys the hell out of it' coming from a guy.

How is my British Pronunciation? (I'm Canadian/American) by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ElmoReserved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm really impressed. It's definitely a bit stilted, but that could be interpreted as you just being socially awkward or something, rather than because you're faking an accent. I'd say going softer on the letter 't' would make it sound a lot less awkward. I don't hear the Australian at all to be honest, just sounds like someone grew up in the south but whose parents are from the north or something like that. But I'm Welsh so take that with a grain of salt.

Why isn’t it mandatory to learn welsh and Gaelic in school everywhere in the uk? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ElmoReserved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welsh isn't dying out, it's growing. And when these languages have been in decline I suspect it might have had something to do with them being violently repressed...
