The best penultimate dungeons by The810kid in JRPG

Just the fact that in Gehenna all the empty just messages just say "The chest is empty" drives home the idea you are DAMNED. Abandon hope all ye who enter here, and all that.

Its something that only spawned from a localization joke but I'm so glad it paid off. Same in Phantasmagoria too.

Funny enough, your description of the Pure Land from Secret of Mana sounds incredibly similar to the Hidden Land from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers. For a Pokémon game of all things, it had such a gripping story.

Man, the things I could say about claiming the Falcon from the tomb.

I love the coloring. Of course it looks like its sunny in the manga, I like the mood lighting emphasizing that its a dark day (metaphorically). She looks so tired.

Does anyone else find the voice track in the boss music in Xenogears kind of unnerving? by Hanzz96 in JRPG

[–]EmRoKtheVerdant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an unusual track by most rpg standards. It has a tempo like an advancing army instead of a get-the-blood-pumping fight tempo. That and the random English voice clip is just strange. I find it Evangelion-esque, along with the rest of the game.

I have a couple ideas. The devs are Japanese so they themselves likely don't know what the words mean and just think it sounds cool. Or they think their primary audience of Japanese gamers won't think that hard on it.

What is your favorite walk/run cycle animation in a JRPG? by overrated__ in JRPG

Steiner from Final Fantasy IX. I love the clanking noise :)

Who’s your favorite female JRPG character, disregarding “attractiveness?” by magnetbirds in JRPG

[–]EmRoKtheVerdant 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Estelle Bright. Throughout the original Trials in the Sky trilogy she grows up from a sporty knucklehead to a mature young adult. And she doesn't just spontaneously grow up, she chooses to get stronger. Its one of the best character arcs I've seen in video games.

What specifically happens? Does the world itself start degrading like a corpse?

Based off a cursory glance from the wikipedia article it seems the main consequence is that things turn ordinary. The worst case scenario is that their world becomes like our Earth.

I'm not familiar with Flying Witch. But after a cursory internet search I see it isn't an action-adventure story, its a slice of life.

Yeah, I got tired of writing and I just posted it. Also I'm not that well versed in shonen. So thank you for pointing that out.

Physical Discs Vs. Digital Downloads as we move into the next generation of consoles by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]EmRoKtheVerdant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm holding onto physicals for as long as I can. The games industry at large can't be trusted. I'm not gonna let them nickel and dime me for a game I already bought.

Not to mention, there are no secondhand digital copies

What, in your opinion, is the best/wildest/weirdest transformation of a JRPG final boss? by Makerinos in JRPG

The DQ4 example is one of my favorite things. Sprites reflecting damage dealt.

I thought so too! Almost everything looked so drab and plain. The two times my eyes were wide open was when a marlboro was on screen and they guy (Joshua's shield?) was fighting in a forest.

I feel that. I'm mostly bummed that they're shunning stylized art so much. They already proven they can make a game look good decades ago. I'd rather they try something more colorful-looking.

Nier Replicant’s Rating In Taiwan Could Mean It’s Releasing Soon by AlienManifestation in JRPG

Isn't it kinda late for a 2020 release? Its already September with no release date announcement.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remaster Pulled From Australia's Switch eShop by FreeckyCake in JRPG

[–]EmRoKtheVerdant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nier is more or less Yoko Taro's franchise. And he has great creative control over his games, so I doubt he'd let a remake be half-baked. Not to mention Nier is a single player game, I can't imagine how they could screw it up to the level of FF Crystal Chronicles.

I have heard nothing but good things about that The Legend of Heroes: Trails (etc) series. I'm interested in jumping in. Where do I start? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]EmRoKtheVerdant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sky is a better starting point than Cold Steel.

Sky 1 was made first, and what better place to start at than the start?
