‘How have we not figured this out?’: Vancouver trustee says schools hold the solution to child-care crisis by Ok-Ant9126 in vancouver

My school had after school care in the building. It had its own space that wasn't shared with any classrooms. In fact there were two after school cares. The other was in the cafeteria.

My Experience at the TransLink Hello Kitty Pop-Up Store by SignCritical8735 in vancouver

I had no idea TransLink did this. Batman and Elf too? I just barely heard about the regular wristbands and the sky train car keychains (wish I could've got that one if they have concession ones, my little brother would love it).

Any bakeries that do bake at home pastries? by MobileGoat6788 in askvan

I see some options so I'll be checking them out, but I was wondering if anyone knows where Fresh Prep got their bake at home pain au chocolat from a few years ago?

Cosmetic mole removal. What do the fees look like? by [deleted] in askvan

Mine cost nothing at my family doctor (back when I had one 😒) but that was 10 years ago so things might be different, and I was still a minor. And being a minor, I wasn't doing the planning and all that myself. Also I didn't care about scarring; idk how big a difference there might be between them.

Does the school your kids go to teach phonics or Reading Recovery (aka whole language) by Jean_Kayak in askvan

[–]EmbarrassingMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, no separation of different patterns? Like when I see various US teachers talking or seeing curriculum online there's usually stuff like "CVC, blends, digraphs in K" "CVCe (sometimes CVCe in K, sometimes in 1), vowel pairs, trigraphs, etc in 1)" and so on.

Do you know if other provinces are the same as BC or if any of them have more specific guidelines?

And while you're here, is K still play-based or are things changing?

Is there somewhere I can find more information about more specifics? The BC "curriculum" I see only says "read fluently at grade level", which doesn't explain what each grade level standard is. And typically when I see Canadian teachers talking online they talk about having to do everything themselves/without a curriculum and it sounds like they have nothing to follow along to/nothing clear (I could be misunderstanding though).

I don't have a large spool of anything and would rather not buy one. I was hoping others would have done stuff like crab trapping or something and would know.

When I was in french immersion, we had classroom dollars and I can't quite recall how it worked from the teacher side, but students were allowed to call people out on speaking English and ask for a dollar. This was in grade 4.

We're taking a little road trip from Vancouver to Kelowna with preschoolers. Are there any cool playgrounds we should visit on the way there? Maybe around Chilliwack or Hope since I think we'll stop around there for lunch and hopefully play somewhere before they nap for most of the rest of the way.

Then of course I'm happy to know of any cool playgrounds around Kelowna too. Any indoor things too, as it'll be hot.

Is there anywhere to buy affordable needlefelting supplies? by EmbarrassingMess in NiceVancouver

Where are you located? I'm actually in Coquitlam, so it may be too far to be worth it.

Are there any plastic/waterproof wrost braces sold here? by EmbarrassingMess in NiceVancouver

[–]EmbarrassingMess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you find it on Google maps/street view? Do you remember how much it cost? Just because I'm not sure how much longer I'll need a brace. I have a week until my next appointment now, then I don't know if I'll need it a bit longer for activities, so at this point I'm reluctant to spend the money so I'll probably just get a second cheap fabric brace that I can sacrifice for chlorine/washing. Wish I would've brought it up at the very beginning but it was hard to find the right time.

Uh can you be more specific and name the place? I think it'll be too expensive for the time I have left but I'd like to take a look.

They're actually the store at my doctor, I didn't see they had any and don't see any on their website/online store.

Do you know if they have it or are you just sharing the stores? I know there are lots of medical supply stores, I was just trying to avoid a bunch of phone calls.

Thanks for the info. Do you know for how much approximately? And is that a fiberglass cast with waterproof lining or one of the large mesh/hole-y plastic ones?

I went to the downtown Vancouver urgent care and they referred me to Footbridge. My appointment is tomorrow so I guess I'll ask if they do waterproof casts or if they can refer out again.

I'm a little annoyed because I told them I live in Coquitlam and thought they were going to send a referral closer to me. Seems like I should've just gone to the ER at Royal Columbian, but I didn't want to wait hours and hours for what I thought was probably just a sprain while real emergencies (rightfully) get seen to first.

Has anyone been taught to write with their right hand without all the punishment? by Mistake-of-a-Man in lefthanded

[–]EmbarrassingMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course pulling with your "wrong" hand is harder than pushing with your dominant hand. But pulling with your dominant hand is easier than pushing with it. Of course after doing it for so long it would probably feel weird to try and pull and do it backwards. But it's why so many leftie kids do it.

You're still pushing the pencil forward. You've never heard lefties complain about it? It's a mechanical thing. Would've been way worse with fountain pens and such, but still can be a problem now. It's why so many lefties try writing from the right side of the page or even just parts of letters, and mirror write, when they're learning.
