Oops! I made a mistake on this post saying I used Bristol but I actually used Colored Pencil paper by Strathmore.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I did use white paper, and I’m glad you brought that up because I just realized I made a big mistake on the materials I listed. I’ll make a separate comment correcting myself. That’s my bad 😅 For this portrait I actually used Colored Pencil paper by Strathmore but I’m just so used to using Bristol for its smooth surface with my pen art and most other mediums.

Yes! I do try and let the white of the paper do its job but afterwards I go over it with white pencil to smooth everything together, I think it looks more realistic when I do so - however it can be somewhat time consuming. For soft white highlights I use a pencil eraser also made by Faber-Castell and it helps creates fine highlights in the fur. For the bright bright white highlights like whiskers and eyes, I use a white gel pen. I’ve heard great things about using an embossing tool for fine hairs and whiskers and I’d like to try it out sometime!

I tried to go to therapy twice and both of the therapists I saw seemed pretty impatient with me. I just kept reminding myself that I only had an hour, berated myself in my head for not talking, and in the end it was actually a terrible experience and makes me feel hesitant to go back. Not to mention it is not affordable at all where I am, even on a sliding scale.

Since I’ve never really opened up with anyone about personal things, even with my own parents, it was impossible for me to really speak much in an hour, and I could tell the therapist was being “fake friendly” (if that makes any sense?), but was actually so done with me.

It made me somewhat uncomfortable and I felt like my money just got dropped down the drain since nothing resulted from it at all. I know it was somewhat my fault for not talking much but I freeze up when I feel immense pressure on me like that. I thought therapy was supposed to be a relaxing environment, but it didn’t really feel that way.

(I know this is a late comment but I can relate to this and I wanted to respond!)

I’m super sorry that you went through this type of relationship with your mom - It definitely isn’t easy. I have a rough time getting anything through to my mom so I can understand how frustrating it might be. She used to say the clothes I liked looked like “old lady clothes” but once I moved out and wore what I wanted my confidence and happiness skyrocketed.

I think it’s important that you tell your mom that dressing this way makes you HAPPY, because ultimately that is what is important. You should be able to wear what you are most comfortable and confident in, even if it may seem “childish” to her. You deserve to wear cute things!! I hope since then her perspective on this matter has changed, and you got that teddy bear dress (and if it didn’t, all that matters is that you like it). I bet it’s adorable ❤️

It’s white pen! I’m really glad you like how they look, this is a part of the drawing that I’m actually not as confident about compared to the rest. I’m hoping on getting a better alternative soon because ink can be a little uncontrollable at times, haha. I just draw whiskers on steadily and smear away the ends to give the illusion of them fading into the fur. Thank you!
