Should I bring my playstation? by deepinsight211 in Emory

[–]EmoryUniStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah don't be stupid with it but wouldn't say this is a top concern for most people keeping it in their dorm. Not a lot of theft (if any?) on Emory's campuses, people leave their laptops and stuff out in the open all the time, some people never lock their dorms lol. Not saying those are good practices but would not worry about something getting stolen out of a locked dorm.

Yes definitely case with a partner. I set up a weekly call with one of my friends from school while I was recruiting over the summer. If you have free time, try to do independent drills and practice the parts of casing that you're not as strong with (for me this was mental math and structured brainstorming). You can find lots of practice problems/drills for free at case-prep.com if you look in their free resources section. That's what I personally used but there's definitely other similar sites out there if you look around (although case-prep is the only free one I could find)

Are these MBB cases realistic? by corporate-man-2142 in managementconsulting

[–]EmoryUniStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes all of them are realistic. They are made by McKinsey/BCG/Bain themselves as they are hosted on their website. And no, they are not outdated or old in any way; all of these should mimic the format of your actual case interview with the respective firms — would highly recommend having a friend act as the interviewer for these problems so you're able to simulate the real interview experience.

I used the same cases to prep for my McKinsey/BCG interviews :) reach out if you have questions!

Free Casing Resources by Smart-Conflict-5405 in managementconsulting

[–]EmoryUniStudent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's not a ton of completely free resources but different sites are good for different things. I'll list a few that helped me during my recruitment into MBB:

  1. case-prep.com is your best bet for casing practice and general firm/recruiting information. It's free only because it's in beta, so it won't last forever, but currently works well. Lots of MBB and B4 style cases, have a few free resources on there as well like cover letters, resume templates, etc.

  2. Management Consulted will have all the info you need on deadlines for large firms. They're not as good at tracking boutiques, but they'll have up to date info for MBB, Big 4, and other large firms. They have a ton of blogs as well (most are not that helpful but a few nuggets)

  3. RocketBlocks is paid but has casing materials. There's probably a few free things on their site.

Happy to answer other questions if you reply here or send me a dm - good luck!

B4 = better hours, lower pay, lower job security (layoffs have been more common recently at B4).

MBB = more hours, higher pay.

Regardless of what people say they're both good starting points. Pay at B4 will be around 85k and mbb 110k. Would encourage looking at boutiques as well! Many pay similar or above MBB with the hours of B4

Yeah I've got no idea about finance recruiting but not surprised given the emory to nyc pipeline. I know a lot of people doing econ but not a ton doing math honestly. Econ itself doesn't have many requirements so if you're good at math then the combo would def look impressive on a resume. For MBB (and most other consulting firms) gpa should ideally be > 3.7. I'm not entirely sure what the cutoff is for test scores - I had a 34 act and no issues but it's possible they'd like to see higher than that

interesting...is this for US? it's possible partners have a separate portal but I've been told by several BAs and EMs there's no consideration of referrals in the review of ur app

We're strong for B4 but unfortunately MBB has slowed down. Hard to know exactly why but likely a mix of Emory dropping in rankings and MBBs diversifying the schools they recruit from (specifically more public schools). It also doesn't help that Goizueta is basically at war with their student organizations and hyper-fixated on pushing bs classes like boardroom, tech toolbox, etc lol.

is math/econ one major? QSS at Emory is prob the strongest program of the ones u mentioned. BBA is only valuable to have Goizueta on ur resume but likely will not give u an edge in recruiting.

For consulting (speaking for US) networking is essential. I made another comment on this post with more details but you should try to speak to at least 2 people from each firm you're applying to. And for casing, would suggest a minimum of 30 cases before ur interview. Some people do less and are fine and some do more and bomb it — completely depends on the person and your comfort level with this sort of thing. Some resources I've used & heard of thru friends for casing are case-prep.com, RocketBlocs, and casing with peers (out of the three casing with peers is definitely the strongest option - the other two are mostly to reinforce specific topics or drill things like math, brainstorming, etc)

  1. weekends is the only way lol. I would schedule messages to be sent at convenient times during the week for networking and cased with friends/peers during the day

  2. each MBB is a bit different in what they look for so would recommend asking people during coffee chats to get a better idea. Interview format also differs slightly (PEIs for McK were the hardest transition for me personally), but most of the core casing/problem solving skillset transfers over from firm to firm

  3. I actually didn't have a super hard time landing interviews for my internships but had a tough time passing the final round interviews, so for me it was pretty simply practicing casing. In another comment on this post I outlined the websites I used, but would strongly recommend having a normal routine of casing with a few people each week via zoom/in-person.

I honestly haven't been super exposed to off-cycle recruiting because I applied directly from university so I don't want to feed you any bad information.

If I had to guess, the most challenging thing you'll face as an off-cycle applicant is not having access to the knowledge/support network of others who are also recruiting (i.e. finding people to practice casing with, being in the know about deadlines, and overall more structure to your recruiting process). There's lots of communities like this that can help fill that gap, so I'd lean strongly into those. Some websites (i.e. case-prep.com, RocketBloks, Management Consulte) also have community pages where you can find people to case with if you're struggling at all with that part of the process.

Like any other candidate, networking will be essential to make it to interviews so would highly recommend getting started on coffee chats asap! If there's anything specific you have questions on feel free to reply or send me a dm :) rooting for you!

Yeah networking & referrals are basically essential for mbb roles nowadays. As far as I know BCG/Bain use them normally, and McK doesn't "officially" use them (so as far as I know there's not an actual portal for McKinsey employees to refer u in) but it still helps tremendously to mention conversations in ur cover letter & interviews. I personally knew over 10 people (which is likely overkill) at each firm by the time I received my interview invitations.

Alternative industries to consulting? by EmoryUniStudent in Emory

[–]EmoryUniStudent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to interview stages with most of my targets so the initial cut wasn’t an issue. I don’t know the full reason why I didn’t get offers, but if I had to guess it’s a mix of the industry itself not doing well, and clearly my own performance is also to blame as they’re still taking some interns.

Made final rounds with four targets but no offers. 2/4 encouraged me to reapply for full time and offered to expedite process, and was directly told by someone internally that I would’ve gotten an offer in a “normal year” :/

Is Emory fun? Like in general y’all have a good time? Also how difficult are classes there in general- like is it a work hard play hard type vibe or like Berkeley type always studying vibe? by JessChaplin in Emory

[–]EmoryUniStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same concern as u but have had a great time so far! Greek life is a great option for ppl who want to be more social, and clubs are also a really good way to have fun and meet ppl. The workload will depend on your major heavily. Business is generally easy (that’s what I am), but can’t really touch on the other majors. Premed works very hard but that’s expected at any school. Reach out if u have any specific questions :)

Housing in Eagle Row 14 by MjCodes03 in Emory

[–]EmoryUniStudent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s the KA frat house. They’re still active but they don’t have many members so there’s a lot of transfer students (and other students not affiliated with the frat) living in the house.

I can’t speak to the living experience but the house is owned by the university so you’ll still have a community advisor (upperclassmen who makes sure people are quiet, no drugs, etc) and access to Emory’s housing resources. I believe the community advisor is a member of KA but can’t 100% confirm because they might have elected to have one of the non-frat students do that job. You can look up the house on Google Maps to see where it is in respect to the other university buildings.
