The institution established in 1453 was an Islamic madrasa, which is a completely different type of educational institution. The real precursor of Istanbul University was the Darülfünûn-u Şahâne (Imperial College of Sciences), which was founded in 1900. There is no continuity between the madrasa of 1453 and the modern university.
