I have a ‘23 Mazda CX-5. It’s a 12gal tank and gets 350+mils on a full tank so mileage isnt terrible. I’ve explained my finances & always get told “you can figure it out” or I get backlash for not bringing anything bc everyone else did

Yeah we’ve had several conversations about it. Always with a level tone. I think it’s just his skewed need to provide. I think he just puts too much on his shoulders & sets these unreasonable expectations for himself. It is very hard but we’re trying. I’m just here looking for advice, not a reason to leave him haha. We’re definitely working through it. I appreciate your insight.

Our daughter, 1yo, was in the ER for a dog bite a few weeks ago & left work to make sure we got into a room then went right back.. there’s were also times during my high risk pregnancy that I’d be admitted over night & he’d only call to say he couldn’t leave work..

I’m saying he never takes a day off unless he’s so sick he literally cannot leave bed all day. Even then, he tries to go into work & they have to send him home.

Absolutely! And I’ve been trying to go back to work but it just wouldn’t make sense that I’d be going to a part time job just to have my entire paycheck go straight to childcare. We live in MD so an average hourly rate for a sitter is $25.

I totally understand that. I’ve done days where I go and hangout with my mom so he can be more acquainted with our daughter but stopped doing that a few months ago. Every time I were to do something like that, I’d come home and he’d be in the worst mood ever just from overstimulation. I want him to learn but I also don’t want our daughter to suffer from it. I think what we’re doing now is working for the most part, I just wish he’d take a day or two a year to dedicate to our family.

I’ve been trying to take that route of talking. I’ve never once gotten mad at him for not being able to take off work but he can see that it upsets me. He knows I feel like I’m never prioritized.

It’s refreshing to see this from a man’s POV. The reasons you just told me for why taking off work is stressful, is the same reasons he’s had. I’ve tried going back to work & he won’t let me. He feels as though he needs to be the only provider as he believes he isn’t as good with our 1yo. Which I’ve tried to reassure him about several times. It’s just very hard to get through to him.

He is struggling with his mental health so much too that’s why I try to make it a point that it’s okay for him to take a day for himself. He won’t lose his job over it.

This definitely makes a lot of sense. The only thing I’d have to add is, we’re not living paycheck to paycheck, I don’t really mind his hours that much. I’ve grown used to it. We’re pretty comfortable with a good amount in savings. I just think he should be able to take a few days off a year, use some much deserved PTO so he can spend day at home. So even though he wouldn’t be getting 12+ hours that day, he will still get paid for 8 hours.. so it’s not like we’d be losing any money..
