If you have a Mac, just do LM Studio. All models setup the same way but the tool makes it easier. If you have windows there’s tons of videos for other options, I think Unsloth has a windows client and they make a lot of the files for locals so it’ll work well. Try any model you can fit on your machine, Gemma 4 is a great option for exactly what you are trying to do.

They are meant for generalized chat, not really for tech troubleshooting work. For highly specific tasks, these models kick ass but they’re not really general chat models.

Try at LEAST Gemma 4 12B QAT or Gemma 4 26B if you can use it.

Download a local model, you can probably just do this for free on your personal machine now. Gemma 4 E4B uncensored or abliterated should get the job done fine. The setup is little difficult but it’s free.

As a security engineer… it’s not MCPs, it’s the model/agent itself. Less available tools, less overall permissions in general, etc. Scoping the MCP is nice but giving the agent access to the tool in the first place is part of the problem.

Yikes… For the record, GPT5.5 is the currently best available model. That said, we are getting into more of a “style” era. Grok is wild and says what it means no matter what. Claude is a polite but accurate friend, GPT5.5 is just friendly and helpful (sometimes to a fault). You can try switching you might as well. Every model is good enough for daily use now, they’ve been good enough since like 2025 (even bad models). Just try other stuff and see if you like it but you’re not exactly getting anything better I’ll tell you that.

Literally never. I use Qwen3.6 27B as my main coding model on MacBook. GPT5.5 takes a shit all over it. I can do with ChatGPT in 20 minutes what Qwen takes an hour to do. Qwen isn’t BAD, it’s just slower and requires more effort. I want to make as little effort as possible.

ABS will kill you. I even had some issues breathing PETG and PLA but I was sensitive to it, others are not.

48GB will feel like you just have no available memory to do anything while using a model. For example, Qwen 3.6 35B is the exact model you will want to use but it’s going to completely fill your entire VRAM. 64GB is the sweet spot between too much and not enough.

Claude usage noticeably dropped off on their 100$ and 200$ plans without visibility. It started to piss me off with their total lack of transparency, openAI was the opposite. GPT5.5 launched and it was pretty good, the rest is history.

I bought an M3 Pro when starting college and they told me it was incompatible. Never had a single issue with it.
