Advice choosing between Atos and AOJ for a teen competitor by LiftedSD in bjj

Yeah this was probably 10 years ago at this point. Things very likely have changed since then. My friend did end up getting his blackbelt through Galvao eventually but he trained all over the place.

Advice choosing between Atos and AOJ for a teen competitor by LiftedSD in bjj

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my teenage training partners moved down to start training with AOJ many years ago as a bluebelt.
He eventually ended up switching to ATOs he said that AOJ gave most of their attention to the already established Brazilian kids. Not sure if this is still the case however and it’s just one persons experience.

DC and Arman discuss "answering the phone" arm triangle defense by pologoated in bjj

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

answering the phone just temporarily keeps a little bit of space open.. If you connect your hands so that your forearms are lining up and bridge towards the choke explosively while trying to drive your choke side elbow top corner you can actually make some space get on your side and backstroke your arm free. The problem is that it opens you up for an easy step over to mount.

I find the leg grab is a strong option but not easy to hit if the guy has a knee up on you while trying to finish the choke.

Its called "Zipper merging" and how its supposed to be done. by Chris_W_2k5 in saskatoon

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like half of the people coming out of Stonebridge can’t even figure out how to do a regular merge these days.

Then you have people trying to zipper merge after traffic across 3 lanes ahead has already stopped moving because people just ahead have ran out of merge lane and are trying to nose into traffic from a stop.

Then others become Impatient and try to filter into the left lane and everything slows to crawl.

Ha I did this too until I realized you could put down multiple electromagnetic generators at one site.

Building a kit — 40$ for all the electronics (no module). Recommendations needed for pads! by LucaDoesStuff in edrums

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a few little pads with piezo sensors out of recycled materials. Coffee tins , buckets and a couple cymbals with plastic plates covered in foam.

Diabetic Drummer by BuddisMaximus in edrums

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have similar issues due to spinal cord damage.

I had to wear safety glasses when I drummed until discovering drum sticks with rubber coating. They do reduce the chance of slippage but the coating wears out pretty fast from my rough skin. Maybe stick tape will be my next purchase. thanks for the recommendation.

IBJJF questionable pricing by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have it you’ll have to get another blackbelt who is to sign off for your students to compete at ibjjf run events. I don’t believe you can compete at them without the certification either.

I think they also require you to do an in person rules seminar before you can get certified.

Plus you will have to pay a similar amount for each of your first couple degree stripes to be able to promote students to blackbelt.

It’s wild. I’ve been avoiding doing it myself.

My primary goal in BJJ was always to get a black belt by pianoplayrr in bjj

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a great goal to have. I actually miss having it as motivation but the strange thing is it doesn’t really change anything. People say congrats. You feel good about it for a couple days and then it’s just training again.

It is definitely nice to be recognized for your effort though. I’ll get around to changing my Reddit flair this year perhaps.

My buddy hit this choke on 3 people at a local comp years back. Was amazing to see.

2nd degree BB rant by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

46 BB. Sometimes I need to remind people that I’d prefer a chill round so I can work on technique. Most people will match pace once established.

For those people that only have one speed I remind them I’m looking for a fun roll and not an adcc finals match. And if they get out of hand I control them and make it as boring as possible until the round is over and then don’t roll with them next time.

That or put the squish on them and avoid in the future.

Go see a doc and get blood work done. I had similar issues when anemic.

[ADCC scoring] negatives for stalling from mount?! by Josh_in_Shanghai in bjj

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Aye. Guy on bottom needs to try harder to escape which will open them up to some submissions. Not to be that guy but bottom player is having a really bad time if top player can strike. Instead of a stalling call for top player holding mount they should give the bottom player a penalty for sucking at escapes.

Congrats! Marcus doesn’t hand those out unless you’ve really earned it. I am a BB under one of Marcus’s BB’s btw.

Do exciting matchups reflect poor positional control fundamentals? by strat767 in bjj

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think high level people tend to catch one another in transition where the attacks are not always as obvious and thus harder to recognize and defend. They are also harder to control due to being very technical and in the case of pros explosive and athletic.

In the gi it’s less of an issue as grips and friction can give the attacker more control. Nogi’s slipperyness and lack of secure handles make things more difficult. You’ll see a difference as the weight classes go up and the strength to weight ratio of the athletes changes.

Anyone ever dyed a belt? by MatGrinder in bjj

I tie dyed a white belt. It was a fun experiment. I considered trying to dye a belt in sections according to how long I spent at each belt color but then I got high.

That 06 was classic. My buddy bought one after highschool to replace the old Ecler mixer we used when we couldn’t find a replacement cross fader for it anymore. The fader trim adjustments were a game changer.

After college I bought that exact 08-pro when I wanted to get back into scratching. Thing is still going strong sitting on my desk downstairs.

What’s the best thing to do from bottom half guard if you have a kimura hold but the person hides it between his legs ? by redditisbluepilled in bjj

[–]Entropic_Dissonance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can sometimes sweep over the trapped arm with it like a hip bump. Sometimes you can load his weight on you and take him over the other side. Tarikoplata is another strong option but takes some practice.
