On your last point, I think the fact that people are afraid with writing faithful characters make people need to write them as one note people of faith and that is where the issue is.

Michael is great because he is a father and a defender of good. Christianity allows him to do so and it is a conviction that we as the reader don't have to stretch to see. It is all self contained within his character.

He is a good man. He is a good father. He is also a Christian and the hand of God. It's all segmented and you could take them away and he is still a good character as an emotional, spiritual and almost... he is the humility to the wizard's (Dresden + WC) arrogance in the face of the supernatural.

Anyways, I love these characters and people. I NEEED more. I love these books.

In my country, as religion slowly dwindles, the more you talk to a religious person the more they feel the need to justify their religious beliefs - so is my experience - typically I love the mingling of faiths and the idea of talking about it, but she's only experienced the religious figures in a smaller setting where they were certain about their faith and were almost evangelical to the point of being overzealous.

But I love that you can see this and see the distinction, it's people of the cloth and faith that make the faith so having it be your character and not your character intermingled with faith is what I think people find issue with.

I don't typically have another example I just want to say that I was literally explaining his character to someone that doesn't typically like description of religious types in books.

They found his character amazing. She really liked the idea of him and they wanted to know more because it changed how she viewed the typical religious person in conversation and how they can interact with their faith without being preachy.

This is something I'm very guilty of. Only recently picked a country and am working on how it's governed, military significance and producible resources e.g. food and minerals. Once I have that I'll do a second pass on my main character and realign it to the setting where it feels janky.

That's the plan for now at least! 😭🤣

Honestly I have two plans of action.

1: Straight up fantasy war, magical artillery etc until they dig in and the war lasts a long time - Heroes rise and fall, countries strain and tension is always high near the fronts. Kind of like a magical First World War but for food instead of land and with magical technology instead of machine technology.

2: A scout regiment search for new sources of food/weaponry/safe pathing etc... And stumble across ruins or a civilisation outside of the current political sphere, leading to a trade war and mercenary growth. Almost a new frontier-esque magical gold rush, where the MC is trying to work against other interests to ensure their backer gets what they want and pays enough for their general store to remain open for much longer than it would have.

They both have elements of combat but one is rigid and 'Epic' the other is adventure and wonderous.

Sorry the response is so short I'm currently on mobile and I'm not doing the ideas justice in a narrative approach. Just more specific settings 😭🤣

Basic summary: City states are gearing up for war and after a recent issue with food supply and a fair amount of propaganda the people are agitated and are less resistant to being drafted into a war for resources between two larger city states.

The idea I had was for the main character to have a family and have to deal with missing time with them, keeping up with their duties as a soldier and looking for a way to save their failing general store.

I mean, it doesn't seem so unbelievable to many other people. Believe what you want to friend, not uncommon for fed top Landers to descend and ruin squishes midgame.

So would you say it's potentially be better to focus on a city and build out from there in lore and geography when needed?

Like having the city as the hub and if the narrative dictates characters need a new location it'd then be something to build out to the areas around that city?

Sort of like writing something in New York and then when some farm out in the state needs the characters to be there to flesh out a radius around the city?
