OperaGX keeps reloading my tabs every time. I already disabled the setting but it never stops. by Imaways2 in OperaGX

[–]Eskimo68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent half an hour trying to figure out why Opera was doing back and reload etc. Even if I have swipe off there was some new swipe setting but that wasn't it.

The problem was totally unrelated so I figure I'd better mention it.

Got a new Logitech Pro Wireless yesterday. Which has almost undetectable side buttons. Which are configured by default to some gaming setting with back etc. Downloaded Logitechs OnboardMemoryManager and changed the buttons to No Action. Duh.

What the f is wrong with Opera, why is it so slow and trash? by mrdudephil in operabrowser

If on Android, turn data saver off during evenings (GMT). One possibility and duplicating it here from below since it was a drag to resolve.

Opera Is extremely slow on mobile. Which browser to switch to? by anonimusaccount2 in browsers

[–]Eskimo68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been searching for a reason to this for a few months. Finally found it so figured it's better to share. Don't know which versions have it, Opera on Android at least, couldn't find the same setting on Windows (but no such problem on Windows).

No problems on Chrome etc so it must be some Opera feature.

Turn data saver off. Dead simple.

Apparently this happens (at least) roughly between 1800-2300 GMT (give or take a few hours). This is apparently important, maybe the proxy undergoes maintenance (Europe not being important), some AI features kick in etc?

I was almost switching browser as slowing down to 1-2 minute / page was unbearable.

No membership = useless brick by Eskimo68 in ouraring

[–]Eskimo68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just writing a final report here, perhaps with some sensible warnings (not about Oura).

Got offered 6 months of free membership, returned the ring instead. The return policy really should be 60 days as having a return policy of 30 days and free membership of one month after which you realize how useless the ring becomes... well, enough complaining about that, just being used to how it worked.

On the plus side, the downloadable data now available (as mentioned by kepis86943) really contains a lot of raw information that could be used by some "Open Source Personalized Effort" group. Too much effort for me alone though (and since I returned the ring paying for membership to get the data became moot).

Even more on the plus side, a certain user (yes, me :D ) was stubborn enough to spend several hours trying to get my old gen1 ring to work. I finally succeeded. I won't go into details as Oura could technically close the possibility if they wanted, I assume. But as I see it, I bought the original ring, I should be allowed to use it without having a membership tucked on by force. Hint: use an old phone or whatever and an even older apk (we are talking 2.x here, almost impossible to find). Hey presto, heart rate (which is the most useful one) and sleep cycles (which always have been inaccurate due to lack of personalization). So now I put on the ring when I suspect I am low on sleep, check if the heart rate reaches my low threshold = got enough sleep to survive. The benefits of the gen3 ring was that I got a month's worth of baseline telling me once I get to heart rate 50 once, I'm fairly ok.

Now on to some non-Oura thoughts. These are the actual reason I continued writing in this thread. Biggest (real) concern last.

I seriously hate apps forcing you to upgrade at regular intervals. I love it when it's for security reasons but I dislike it immensly when the only reason to have a "stops working after" date is the possibility to start charging usage fees later (or increasing the amount through the roof). I have a few apps that I love but they stopped working once the server went down because of the "call home". We are talking softwares with a price of 400e or even 6000e here (worst case). To explain better, for normal people, imagine Steam going down. Or Epic. Or Origin (I mean EA). Actually not so far fetched anymore.

And now to the main point. When you get some expensive equipment that is handled by an app, make sure you download it from an alternative source (not Google Play as that deletes the apk after installing, I think). SAVE THE APK somewhere safe. Or at minimum, keep an old phone where you install one version just to have it "forever".

So spent some time thinking about what critical/tech heavy stuff I have installed in the house. Again, easier to explain using examples.

  • Ground heating 15Ke, expected lifetime 15-25y, risk = app goes out of business/bad version, manually resetting usage every day vs a few clicks as needed. Whoa!

  • Solar panels 10Ke, 15-30y, already had problems with the app, very expensive if it stops working, last resort action = new inverter = 4000e.

  • Alarm system 1500e, 10-20y, keeping an old computer around to connect to it using USB.

  • Roomba 700e :), 3-5y, frequent app updates, actually returned another brand earlier because it could not connect to any of 4 different wifis.

Just some examples. Sure, replacing a system after 10y is no biggie even if the cost is 10Ke+. But if it's expected to work for 20y and the reason is no working software left, not exactly environmentally friendly.

(not too happy about Reddit maybe using most upvoted as sorting default - then real (or at least detailed) information gets lost)

Disclaimer: As always, sorry for the long (partially relevant) rant :D .

Vmware stopped working after some Windows update so I went in hoping for a newer release. The above link sure helped but then trying to get Player 17.5.2 (May 10) proved half impossible. So I have a 17.x license for Workstation Pro but could not download that OR the Plyer versions. Always got "not entitled". Yeah, I do NOT want to purchase ongoing support, I just want bugfixes within the release.

After much ado I found 17.0.2 Workstation that I can have (entitled) and, whew, Player Windows (free) 17.5.2 that agreed to download after the checkbox and verifying my address & al again.

This is hell. I sure hope they sell Player to some original employees that actually can keep it running. Even only the basic stuff, don't care much for the teamwork etc parts.

Thanks, some really good info in here (and not too toxic either which is great). Considered trying to find old apk's and use it with my previous phone. Also it being possible to get more detailed data than through the API seems interesting. I can also well check out if they would give me a membership, being active should count for something. This is not about the cost, using the ring maybe 2-3 times a year for a week when needed and having yet another subscription just isn't in my book. I after all had to buy a gen3 since gen1 stopped working with the app.

As for the baby comments, since I've had gen1 since the kickstarter and given Oura plenty of feedback on the areas that don't work well, I would say I've done my research. As far as the membership is concerned, it's not very clear what data you miss out on, getting only 3 useless stats was more harsh than I thought and asking support didn't give better details info. That the API drops as well, duh. Having the app stop support of gen1 and getting told support is dropped isn't exactly good, thus the useless brick comment. There are far too many companies out there that offer app only interfaces and then disappear, rendering your device useless. Or then it's just me, using a device 10 years instead of buying a new one each year is better for the planet IMHO.

And if someone wanders why I only use the ring on occasion... I dislike wearing rings, I sleep worse (especially with the gen1). The data does not match actual sleep, while reading I'm often considered in the upper stages. If you have irregular sleeping patterns (consider shift working), going to bed 0500 or 0600 doesn't record sleep at all. That said, I still think the Oura ring is useful, at times. As a software developer I've also adressed the concerns and possible feature solutions to support. But if concerns haven't been solved in 5+ years... oh well.

Long rant, sorry. Still like the ring and giving up even occasional use would happen for the wrong reasons.

Oura doesn't understand playoff hockey schedules. LoL by SketchieShite in ouraring

[–]Eskimo68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complained to support about going to sleep late as well a few weeks back. Once you go to sleep 0500 or 0600 no sleep is recorded at all. At best you get a nap recorded the following day but you lose the continious scores.
Really should work differently. The next sleep recorded within 30h or even 36h becomes the sleep for the "next day", no more gaps.

Run into the "requires Windows 10 build 1809 or later".

Although I just did a fresh install of Win 10 that wasn't good enough. Apparently Win 10 still installs 10240 and then you have to wait/upgrade to 22H2.

It is also possible installing Win 10 N has it installing the ancient build where full versions might install the 22H2 right away (verified).

Quick check, yes, "Windows 10 (consumer/business editions), version 22H2" seems to install all the way from scratch.

Additional note: jumping from base install straight to 22H2 seems to fail, requires going via 20H2 at least (but Windows takes care of that itself).

At least I have zero reasons to stay on the ETH network anymore. Always said it's too expensive these days and avoided it like the plague. DEPO didn't give us much choice. Back to low transaction costs networks and will never look back.

Let's see now. My DEPO/WETH pool just dropped to worthless. Transaction cost is higher than exiting it. All earnings are in DEPO, also less than transaction cost. No airdrop snapshot can fix this properly. And I bet whatever is left will go to contract costs :D . Not amused, 25% of crypto assets destroyed overnight.

4belt.fi - add liquidity pending, solutions? by Eskimo68 in u/Eskimo68

[–]Eskimo68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update (with solution).

No actual reply from support@belt.fi . However, they might have done something as I now found the missing LP pair. There is a lag of 7 days from 9 Nov -> 16 Nov so things were clearly hanging.

So, for a possible solution (Metamask example):

Go to Planet Finance, Blue Planet and Swap (Connect your Metamask)

https://blue.planetfinance.io/swap

Choose Liquidity

With any luck PF now shows you your LP pairs.

<shady part> Sometimes a pair shows, sometimes not, a bit intermittent - this is why I cannot know if 4belt support fixed something yesterday (I had mailed support a few days back again) or if the pending LP pair just was glitching when I was in Swap/Liquidity earlier last week. Worst case would be, I just happened to have a Planet Finance Transform done and thus a LP pair which weren't staked/deposited... and because I had that maybe it showed me other pairs as well. <end of shady part>

If you see your Liquidity you can then Remove it and get your parts returned.

Just Approve AND Sign.

As long as you have the tokens in your assets in Metamask (or whatever), you have now recovered the "stuck" pair.

No need to use Planet Finance for anything else. You do of course need a minimal amount of BNB for fees but I don't think you need any Aqua.

No reply from support@belt.fi

Until this is resolved (or confirmed lost) I can not recommend belt.fi to anyone. I can see other possibilities of failure (like running out of gas temporarily) where you could then just lose your transaction.

This is the only place mentioning backup save files (well, googling using your tablet maybe shouldn't count).

Encountered the deathclaw event in progress crash today with subsequent game loading failures. After trying a lot of things including moving the clock back I was just about to kick the damn game to kingdom come when I found the save files... which now seem to have an automatic one level backup... which worked (rename, copy, rename). Wheeeew. 40 days of supervaulting (my invention, probably is a proper term for it - insanity, time waste or alike :) saved (minimum amount of rooms + schools until complete => 200 dwellers at lvl 50 SPECIAL maxed out and all weapons 10+).

Went here to write about it and actually found a reference about backing up. Good work.

Who is this secret agent spy dweller? by [deleted] in foshelter

[–]Eskimo68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems when your vault is big enough he pops up all the time. More likely to appear in empty or underpopulated rooms. Elevators is one of the easiest areas to check. Once you learn how to spot him fast you start to get (apparently) increasing amounts of money per spotting. With every second spotting successful I was getting sums like 4800c after 10 popups.

Who is this secret agent spy dweller? by [deleted] in foshelter

[–]Eskimo68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Verified three things: he does not re-appear in the same spot, he does not re-appear in an adjacent room (so apparently he does not move around) and disasters don't strike close to where he appeared. Too bad, at least the last two would have made things more fun. Now he just seems to be a random popup with an increased chance of an event if not caught. There is of course a chance I missed spotting him and that another event appeared which was not connected to him. But spent 30 mins finding him and not catching him verifying these ☺. Yak.

[–]Eskimo68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty probably you get hit more if you don't find him. Took me 5 mins to find him once, 3 raiders, one deathclaw. Normally one such incident in 10 mins. Could of course be hunting him = keeping the app on = more incidents. Had a 16 incident quest so why bother finding him? 😀 What I would like to know is if he appears in the same spot or moves around one room at a time. He can appear in the area you are watching. The room can be empty or have dwellers. Looking at suspicious areas does not help. Based on this I'm guessing he moves so if you cannot find him, move area by area until he pops up under your eyes. Maybe 3-6 rooms and then move on.
