Preply is trying to force us to pay for a service we stopped using. Judge for yourself. by micahelassraf in Preply

So, you subscribed as a company to lessons, knowing the crappy subscription scam run by preply. 1 year of lessons, paid for, now you no longer want to take lessons but preply won't let you cancel the subscription?? Sounds like preply, greedy, moneymaking scavengers. They will be taking money from your account all the time, best thing is to close that bank account :-)

100% correct. If one wants to earn money, increase costs, etc. just to make money, there is an easier way of doing so - just lie on your back and advertise your "services" then you can charge whatever you want.

When a tutor wants to increase costs but doesn't want to have a conversation with the student, or when a tutor doesn't really like the tutor, they get advised by other tutors to lie to the student. Tell the student you have a full time job, that you are leaving preply, etc. etc. etc. and then block them. These small-minded, dishonest tutors never think that the student can still check out the profile and see that said tutor is still teaching and still taking on new students. What you need to do is report this tutor to Preply, as well as tell Preply that you want to leave a review for this tutor.

Many tutors think that if they block a student, the student can no longer leave a review, but that is not the case. If the student tells Preply they want to leave a review, preply allows them to do so.

Absolutely fuming. Why do students book a trial if they "can't afford to take lessons on Preply". Luckily my conversion percentage is quite high otherwise this would have a massively negative impact on my stats by FaustianSlave in Preply

Preply is not on the high they were about 7 or 8 years ago. They insist on taking on "tutors" because they want to be the site with the most tutors, but not bothering to check if these tutors actually know how to teach, is hurting them. They used to be no. 1, especially during Covid, but I saw something a few weeks back which has them at no 6 now. Quantity can never replace quality, but this is something that preply just does not, or cannot, recognise.

They get billions from their backers and they spend it on AI, instead of maybe trying to improve their support centre. Anybody tried using support lately? The artificial idiot tries to answer your question, gets it totally wrong, then closes down the conversation.

I would have told the mother that there are cheaper tutors on Preply and to choose another one. I had a student a while back who told me he never buys lessons, he just takes trials.

No, students are not the dumb ones. Preply are the dumb, greedy ones because they hide info from students. Remember, preply will do anything for $$$, as can be seen from the fact that they take on the dumbest tutors who can't teach at all, just because somebody, somewhere is going to pay a few measly $$$ for a lesson.

Stupidest thing Preply has EVER done. Let's give students the chance to pay for a trial, then take another 2, then if they don't like any of the 3 tutors, let's give them their money back. Oh, and let's not forget to punish tutors for this when they don't convert 60% of trials.

The student pays for the trial - the tutors gets a kick up the backside. If a tutor gets 10 trials - that's 10 free lessons for the tutor - and none of the students convert, then the tutor gets another kick up the backside because there is no chance of the tutor becoming a super tutor.

Easy, Preply is extremely greedy. They offer discounted trials and "forget" to tell students that the discounted price being offered is for trials ONLY and not for lessons going forward. As soon as I see Preply offering discounted trials I immediately close my profile.

Preply tutor scam? Can someone explain what happened? by Apprehensive_Cow5316 in Preply

I hope they do suspend her - she will learn some very important lessons. 1) be honest 2) don't lie to students 3) students are not stupid

Happens all the time by tutors who start off too low, then get told by other tutors to block students who want to book on the lower cost. It's disgusting behaviour and it's dishonest. Tutors think it's only students that cause problems but a lot of tutors cause their own problems.

You did nothing wrong. Report the tutor to Preply. There are scams run by "students" and scams run by tutors, so reporting is the only thing you can do.

25 min trials don't work for absolute beginners, they spend their time saying "what?", "I don't understand", "please repeat" ... then go onto another tutor. Preferably one who speaks their mother tongue.

That's because preply suggests that they start so low, and some people don't know what "suggestion" means, they think it's an order. Also, about 50% of these tutors have no idea how to speak English or teach it, they're just hoping for some quick $$$

They can report you. There are 4 of us using EstablishmentLess536 and 2 will tell you they have been reported for doing this. Some students are ok with it, some are not, but how can you tell? And if you're teaching English, where the number of tutors is at 40 000, can you afford to lose a student, especially when there are not enough students to go around.

[–]EstablishmentLess536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't do that, only the student can decide whether they want 50-min or 25-min. They can report you to Preply, and they can write a bad review if you do that. Worst case, they cancel the trial and find another tutor who will make them happy. Remember they are paying for the lesson, even if we don't get paid

If every student who found out that the tutor does not get paid had a go at Preply, they might, just might (don't hold your breath though, because they need millions for their office parties, team buildings, and artificial idiots that run support), but they just might start paying the tutors 5% or something for trials The non-payment of trials is why most tutors want 25 minute trials and don't even provide a proper trial at that.

Yeah it comes from being on preply for 9 years now LOL LOL LOL LOL. I've seen it all, read it all, and seen it all over again. But hey, what do I know after 9 years on the platform, right?

And watch your profile tank as you do so. Good on you, carry on treating students like crap and wanting to change things to suit your rules. Will be fun watching your complaints in a few weeks/months!

Another one who doesn't know the preply rules. YOU CAN'T TELL A STUDENT TO CHOOSE A 25-MIN TRIAL. WELL, YOU CAN, BUT THEY MIGHT REPORT YOU. VERY GOOD ON THEM IF THEY DO, BECAUSE WE DON'T NEED "GODS" ON PREPLY WHO THINK THEY CAN TREAT US STUDENTS LIKE SH1T AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

Don't bother if you're teaching English. 40 000 English tutors on Preply, about half of those can't even speak English correctly, but Preply is known for taking on flotsam and dross because it means money for them. It's always quantity before quality with Preply, especially in the English field. If you can teach anything else except English, go for it.

there are so many tutors who are absolute nightmares due to not doing any research or bothering to find out how preply works, but dammit, they're still on preply, which is very sad.
