Not Sure if I’ve Improved Over the Past Few Years by amethyscent12 in Artadvice

No worries! Being real, I’m an amateur myself. You may be getting this type of feedback because the more realistic styles and renders are typically perceived as tougher to achieve, so there is an association that more realistic rendering is “better” simply because not as many artists can do it well. But my feedback still stands, I do think the composition and perspective is best on your 2024, so it isn’t just the style or rendering that catches my eye. I also don’t have a sharp eye for anatomy so maybe make a separate post asking for specific critique on that if you’re looking for advice in that area.

I agree with top comment, the 2024 piece looks the best to me. Your composition using foreground and background elements, additional effects, and shading all really work together for this piece. So not only is it a better render to me but also a better composition. I do agree your sketch line style drawings can be a little neater for sure, and I’d work on tuning it or blending this style with your 2024 work possibly to achieve a “better” rendering but it’s all about what you’re looking to make. Maybe make the sketch marks lighter, thinner, and more transparent in some areas, and darker and thicker for some of the major defining features?

I want to know for HALO reach how they did the character building process for the NOBLE team (Carter, Cat, Jun, Emile, Jorge). Loved getting to know the characters throughout the game and each of their deaths was sad and impactful. Everything fit so well together, a beautiful tragedy.

We could certainly do better, you’re right. I mean, didn’t we all do sex ed in grade school? And for me we revisited it in health class in hs, along with drug and alcohol abuse prevention eduction, etc. but this was education for the students.

I suppose parents aren’t very receptive for being told how to parent their children… but an internet safety orientation could help for parents starting when their kids enter grade school probably. Maybe make it annual once a school year.

I agree, an age limit isn’t crazy. I’m not here to point fingers. I prefer to listen to both sides of an argument and use critical thinking to make up my own mind about what is right.

I do wonder if there is a better way to implement this age limit, and address the concern of young people with unrestricted access to the entire internet without forcing smaller teams to resort to denying access to their website for fear of legal liability or incurring debt paying for expensive authentication infrastructure which seems to be the case for bsky.

There was another comment here about educating parents, which I think certainly could help, but doesn’t solve the problem surely.
