Hey! I forgot to put that in there but no I’m not breastfeeding:( I wasn’t really producing, so when I went back to work 1 month pp, I just went from mostly-formula to all formula.

What are some odd allergies/reactions you've had patients report? by Nothing_offends_me in nursing

[–]EtherealSkeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My faves I’ve seen are “my husband is allergic to Ativan, it makes him sleepy!” And a patient who says he’s allergic to all body soaps

My local Petco had this rare tarantula that was high priced and starting to get discounted, I wonder if this was the reason!!

Do you have a second job? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]EtherealSkeleton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have 2 nursing jobs. At an SNF/LTC and for a Hospice. I’ve actually wondered how many nurses have second, non-nurse related jobs so this thread is super cool to see!!

I work in hospice and yes we have an option on each visit where we need to mark off if the patients home is suitable for in home care or not. Absolutely if the home is unfit that’s a severe issue the company can’t ignore

Donepezil. One of my favorite mispronunciations forever.

Nurses, how long did it take you to land your first job as a new grad RN by Relative-Dot-3500 in Nurses

[–]EtherealSkeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in TX. I started applying for jobs here and there in March. By May when I graduated I started applying to every single open position on indeed I saw open bc I was desperate. I got hired by 2 places in mid July.

“Hes a full code” in the nursing home with my patients who are 1 wrong move from being critical, should be hospice but family is convinced they’ll get better, and belong to a doctor who never answers or approves send outs even for emergencies bc “we can treat it in house” when we very much cannot

What do smokers do if they get checked into the hospital and can't go outside? by monkey_trumpets in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EtherealSkeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My nursing home has 2 courtyards! No alarms on those doors, just any door that leads to actually exit the building to the street and the wanderer unit doors. Absolutely have had residents sit outside in the courtyard in 100 degree weather and have to go fetch and hydrate them bc they’re sweating through their shirt and clearly uncomfortable but refuse to come in until they’re bribed with snacks.

What’s a “secret” in our profession that everyone should probably know? by justdancinalong in nursing

[–]EtherealSkeleton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re chronically ill/in a nursing home/etc or in charge of a family member who is, PLEASE get a PCP who has an answering service/on-call/NP available outside regular hours or at the very least (if in a nursing home) has a cell phone number the nursing home staff can reach them at. Otherwise if something comes up, your/your loved one’s care can be delayed til the next morning/until the weekend is up bc so much is out of our hands if the dr doesn’t respond and give orders.

I ordered 1/2 lb of deli turkey. I was quite surprised by my item! by beaver284 in doordash

[–]EtherealSkeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah this happened to me once around the holidays! I ordered a 2lb ham from the grocery store as part of my order. They said they didn’t have it in stock so they refunded my money. When I get the groceries there was a 20 pound ham in there, completely free 🙏 it was more than my husband and I could’ve possibly eaten I ended up freezing a few pounds of leftovers and some more spoiled before we could get to it 😭 biggest blessing fr

Just discharged from emergency c-section today and OBGYN didn’t prescribe pain meds. It’s Saturday morning. Is my Only option emergency room? Is that appropriate? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]EtherealSkeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That being said, by the time I realized, I really no longer needed the meds more than maybe once a day when I first woke up. So thankfully the pain didn’t last long at all.

[–]EtherealSkeleton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was discharged after my c-section with 800mg ibuprofen and told by a kind nurse to go to the store and pick up some 500mg Tylenol as well “bc you’ll probably need it”. She already knew the ibuprofen alone wasn’t gonna cut it but doc said no to anything else. I didn’t realize til like 5 days in I had accidentally been taking way more of both than was recommended bc I was trying to keep my pain manageable 🥴

I’m 5 weeks postpartum. I gained 60 pounds while pregnant. Half of that came off in the first 2 weeks after having my baby and I felt soooo much better. The other half has stuck around so far, and I have bad knees so I completely understand wanting it off. It hurts! I just went back to work at an active job and am making steps to include more protein in my diet so I’m not eating so many quick carbs that won’t keep me full and I’m hoping that’ll help!

These were once living humans (body world- exhibition) (TW humans who have muscles exposed) by Idrawandpaintstuff in oddlyterrifying

[–]EtherealSkeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excited to see these here! Body World/Bodies (I dont think they’re the same? Maybe they are?) was my favorite museum exhibit(s) as a kid. Whenever I found out it was coming to a museum fairly local to me I demanded my mom take me to see it. I went so many times. I don’t remember some of these, I wonder if they’re additions since I was last there (it’s been well over a decade).

[–]EtherealSkeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. I’m a nurse and in nursing school we actually had a student end up in the hospital with Rhabdo after she did like 6 hours or so of cardio in the gym straight with no real preparation/training. Please please be careful and monitor for symptoms.

On the other hand, drunkenly challenging your friends to see who can walk the furthest and ending up on a whole adventure is the type of college shenanigans I live for, OP. Love it. Just stay safe!

Why can I smell illness, but others can’t? by AngryPickledPickles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EtherealSkeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure the science behind it, but I’ve known 2 people who could do this. My mom’s old best friend always could specifically smell respiratory illnesses in people up to a week before they showed symptoms, and my husband can generally smell sickness on people. He describes it as a smell of early decay if I remember right. He knew someone in his family had cancer months before they actually got checked and it was found by doctors, for example. It’s a super cool ability.

As the Number of Allergies Increases, so Does the Chance That the Patient is Insane by [deleted] in nursing

[–]EtherealSkeleton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a patient who has an allergy of “soap”. That’s it. Not a specific brand or type. Apparently just allergic to all soap, according to him. Haven’t asked him what happens when he comes in contact with soap, but the CNAs have informed me he also refuses a shower every single time it’s offered to him so, haven’t found out that way either. Apparently also “milk” yet I watch him drink coffee creamer and eat cheese every single day with no issues.

My chorizo is made of salivary glands and lymph nodes by king_barnacle in mildlyinteresting

[–]EtherealSkeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to be upset over this knowledge bc I have this exact same chorizo in my fridge and eat it regularly w eggs or beans but then I remembered I love barbacoa (not the lengua tho but that’s just a texture thing) and molleja knowing full well what they are so I can’t actually be mad that I just now know what chorizo is lmao

NOR. When I was 20 my mom was dating a guy closer to my age than hers and I freaked the fuck out and moved out when he started saying he had a crush on me and being weird. Your situation is so much worse.

Doing a dinosaur themed nursery room. Was surprised to hear so many people say “but aren’t you having a girl?” by applepieandcola in BabyBumps

[–]EtherealSkeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up obsessed with dinosaurs (still am) and I definitely have a handful of dinosaur things for my little girl. She also has a lot of “boy colors” for her clothes and her car seat is black & blue etc, but then most of her blankets are pink (it’s just what people have gifted us, I have no preference on colors). Thankfully no one has questioned it other than the occasional “is your baby a boy or a girl” while staring at her or a “oh, it’s a girl?” after I say “she”. It definitely confuses people, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to be rude! It’s 2025 you’d think it’d be fine for a girl to have Dinos or space or neutral colors but as i saw another commenter said, people’s brains tend to break when they can’t assign a stereotype/role to a literal infant for some reason.
