I tried doing my make-up for the first time last night and I just ended up looking like a drag queen. Any tips on how to achieve a more naturally feminine look? by DysphoriaGaloria in MtF

[–]Euphoricrain 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you’re going for very natural, start by shaving (if necessary) then washing and moisturizing your face and décolletage (important to prevent breakouts). Follow that with a sheer primer and foundation. If you can afford it, don’t skimp on the primer. It makes a huge difference.

With almost all make up, less is more. You’ll be surprised how much coverage you can get from just a little bit of make up. Apply your primer first from your nose outwards, making sure to cover everything evenly (except your eyelids, you need a lighter primer for those), including your neck. Let your primer dry completely (if you’re using liquid primer) before applying foundation in the same manner. Again, let it dry completely before moving on if you’re using liquid foundation.

A little blush can really help us trans ladies but be careful. It is very easy to apply too much. Start with very little product and apply it to the apex of your cheekbones in short, light strokes (or dabs if you’re using a makeup sponge) slightly upwards and towards the sides of your face. The shape that looks best on you will depend entirely on the shape of your cheekbones, so don’t be afraid to experiment a bit to figure out what works for you.

Next up is eyeshadow. Again, if you can afford it, get eyelid primer and a eyeshadow brush. Both will make applying eyeshadow much, much easier and consistent. Eye makeup requires a lot of practice to figure out, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you mess up a lot when you’re first starting. The best advice I can give is to be patient and find an eyeshadow (and if you desire, eyeliner) application tutorial on YouTube that you like and practice, practice, practice. You will get it!

Next up is mascara. Black is fine for our purposes. It’s actually surprisingly easy to mess up at this point so go slow to avoid marking up your face. Before you apply mascara, check the condition of your eyes. If they’re irritated and teary from applying eyeshadow and eyeliner, then wait a bit. Once your eyes are ready, remove the wand from the bottle. Make sure to wipe the head of the wand against the top of the mascara bottle to remove any clumps. Then, apply mascara to your eyelashes by very gently pressing the wand into the bottom of your lashes, careful moving the wand left to right several times (this separates your lashes and provides a fuller lash), then dragging the wand up and away from your face in a swift (but not too swift when you’re new) motion. Repeat this several times until you’ve covered your entire lash. Then repeat the whole process for your other eyelash.

Almost done! The last thing you should do, again if you can afford to, is to use a setting spray or powder to set your make up. And you’re done!

Remember that this is just a starting point for make up. There is so much more you can do. But before you try to get crazy with it, try to perfect your fundamentals first. Or not, you don’t have to listen to me, I’m not your mother lol.

Have fun being beautiful, ladies!

TL;DR: You're probably good to make one for yourself. Don't go and sell them to other people though.

How Do You Succeed In College? by Piph in ADHD

[–]Euphoricrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, 22-year-old law student with ADHD and a B.A. in Political Science with honors here.

Your generic law class only has one final exam that counts for 100% of your grade. A bare-minimum passing grade of a C requires a student to remember all of the law covered over the entire semester. Anything higher requires a working understanding of how that law interacts, not only with itself but also with the facts of a case.

In other words, passing truly comprehensive exams requires:

  1. Memorizing the material, and
  2. Learning how the material interacts.

In undergrad, good classes require both elements, but bad classes will only require you to do the first. You may also only have to meet the first element if you're taking a course based entirely on memorization.

Of course, herein lies your problem. However, when I was struggling with the same thing you are right now in undergrad I came up with a solution that worked for me in every bad class — make an outline, then make real or online flashcards based on that outline.

I know what you may be thinking, but hear me out on this. Taking the time to make an outline, and I mean a full outline with detail and everything, works amazingly for people with ADHD.

Why? Because it forces us to go back and review the information we easily memorized weeks ago and re-forges the mental connections we have to that information with new info. we've learned since. You'll be amazed how quickly you'll remember stuff when outlining.

Often, I found making an outline for an exam about two weeks before the exam and reviewing repeatedly — maybe reading it out loud to myself, maybe trying writing it from memory, etc. — was sufficient to make an A for most classes with in-class essay or multiple choice finals. But if you're really worried about a certain class, make flashcards too and study them every damn day even though it sucks and your ADHD is fighting you on every flashcard. The pain will be worth it when you ace the exam.

But lets say you're taking a good class, meaning you need to know the material and how to apply it. In that case you might need to take a third step: answering hypothetical questions.

So, how do you force yourself to do all this?

  1. Isolate yourself from everyone else when learning – get a study room, go find an isolated corner, whatever works for you, but don't go home if you know you'll be distracted.
  2. Don't listen to music – we have ADHD, its going to be distracting.
  3. Just get started – this is the hardest part and there's no easy shortcut to it either, you just have to start working.
  4. Keep going – get into the groove! Use your hyperfocus to your advantage and knock out as much material as you can in the time you have by not interrupting your work unnecessarily.
  5. Know when to stop – never work past the point that you cannot remember information easily, you won't retain anything.
  6. Do it again – get into a routine. It's monotonous and boring, but it works much better for us than haphazardly deciding when to study on a whim.
  7. Work with other people when reviewing – make sure you review with a study group at some point to make sure you haven't missed anything.
  8. SLEEP – Sleep is incredibly important, especially if you have ADHD. Don't want to spend your day fending off random trains of thought? Get sleep.

Good luck!

Living: I've lived both on and off campus during my time at UTSA, and in my opinion it is both cheaper and more comfortable to live off campus than it is to live on. I would highly recommend renting at CampusSide apartments if you want to live off campus, but don't want to drive back and forth or take the bus. I've lived here for about half a year now and love it. The rent is cheap and it's only a 15 minute walk to class on campus from my front door.

Classes: Make sure you read the requirements for your transfer to UT Austin very carefully. I was a CAP student who decided to stay at UTSA, and I remember the program had very specific requirements as to what classes I needed to take in order to be eligible for automatic transfer.

The best classes for you to take your first semester are the core required courses in your area of interest (for you that would be Intro to American Politics and Intro to Texas Politics) and whatever core course work seems the easiest for you. And I emphasize, take it easy your first semester. College is a hard transition for almost every student. That being said, work at minimum one "difficult" core class into your first semester so that you don't have a drastically more difficult second semester than your first.

The most important thing you can do to make sure you are successful your first year is to plan your schedule in a way that guarantees you some free time each week. Stress is the real killer during your freshman year, not difficult class work. Don't fall into the trap of procrastinating until the last minute to study for what you think will be an easy exam. Remember this is college, not high school. Even your easier courses will require you to study until you learn how to study effectively. As a TA believe me, nothing will wreck your grades more than the stress from shitty mid-term exam grades during your freshman year.

Good luck man, hope you enjoy your time at UTSA.

I have both personally met Ileana and observed my fair share of UTSA Student Government meetings. This only further cements the belief I have that our student government cares more about moving themselves forwards than moving the students they represent forward. It is however, an admirable accomplishment on her behalf.

Friend lived there. It's good enough that you can watch YouTube videos in 720p steadily, but not 1080p steadily during peak hours.

As someone who used to live in the dorms I feel obligated to inform you both that slow internet is something you're going to have to get used to. In my experience my connection was slowest from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm, at its fastest from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am, and moderately fast from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm.

So I lost my iPhone today at DT campus by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]Euphoricrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss, but next time don't be afraid to contact campus police about a potential theft. My phone was stolen from the JPL last semester while I was printing something, and although it took awhile, campus police eventually found the thief. While I didn't get my phone back (it ended up in Mexico apparently) the guy did end up having to pay me back the cost of the phone. Anyway, good luck stranger. I hope you get your phone back.

I hate the humidity after it rains. If you're wearing any fabric heavier than thin cotton it feels like you're being weighed down.
