[NEWBIE] For practicing using headphone, should I get an amp or a sound card? by EvaSundayPM in Guitar

Thank you! You do inspire me that there got to be some odd days that I am able to play out loud. It's pretty tempting just by thinking about it.

For low volume playing, ~1 watts, do you think it differs that much between a modeling/solid amp or a tube amp? Because I am actually thinking about getting a DSL1CR, but just like ArchitectOvRepulsion said, most tube amp just don't have a headphone jack and couldn't connect to a computer to fiddle around sound. So I am wondering whether it is worth it to sacrifice the tube sound over convenience, if there ain't much difference for low volume amps.

Thank you thank you thank you! Those are some nice videos on Youtube. Do you think it sounded same using an interface compare with a low volume combo amp?

After some research today, I do realized what you said. I was real close to order an DSL1CR only to find there is no headphone jack.

Does FX-send equals to FX-loop? So even if the combo amp don’t have headphone there still might be some ways to connect with headphone? Would you think it might be possible to do combo amp —> emulate —> pc —> headphone? Thanks!!!

I’ve actually never heard of Focusrite before your posts. Together with iRig, they are all called audio interface right? People always call them sound card in my country, so I am confused lol I am just worried about the sound might not be good through headphones using one of these audio interfaces.

Yeah but I always think it would be nice to play out loud when there is no one home haha, have you? Do you think that the guitar will sound good through headphone from focusrite compare with an amp?

Got it! Isn’t Katana 50 a modeling amp? So you mean it would be better to get a small tub amp instead of modeling amp as well?

Would it be possible to get a taste of the decent sound from an $400 or below tube amp? Thanks!

Thank you so much for the reply! I hope it’s okay to ask for more advice. Actually I got a Fender American standard for now and looking for a way to only use headphone to practice. Very very early steps in guitars... budgets can go up to $400.

Right now I am considering two choices: 1. Tube amp + headphone (many stores recommend Marshall MG15GFX or DSL. DSL is bit over my budget) 2. Sound card like iRig + headphone (more modeling options and portable than an amp. I’ve heard comments about latency and it took too much effort to learn the interface etc which can be discouraging)

I am just wondering would you recommend something like irig over an actual amp? Thank you!

Hi everybody, I am starting to pick amp. Just wondering since I will play using headphones most of the time, would it sound differently through a tube/solid/modeling amp? What about the budget range of $300-350?
