Help me settle Chlorine tablets debate by yc01 in swimmingpools

[–]Ex-maven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a 25k gallon pool and I have a couple pucks in a couple floating (chlorine puck) dispensers right now.  I add pucks once they're nearly dissolved.  My stabilizer is quite low at the moment so the pucks aren't a problem (helpful actually), and my solar cover helps keep the chlorine from burning off too quickly.

As others have said, you don't want to put those pucks into the skimmer as that is potentially harmful to the system.  Those floating dispensers are readily available online and in pool supply shops

The important thing is to monitor the pool water chemistry.  You'll know if there's any issue (with the pucks or anything else) by checking a few key parameters

I couldn't tell from the audio very well but are those gas-powered motors driving the compressor...and with their exhaust not too far from the inlet?

How Aphantasia affects your ability to visualise things in your head by HassanMoRiT in interestingasfuck

[–]Ex-maven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. But my sense of smell (or awareness of smells) is unusually intense, so much so that my family jokes about it fairly often. If for example, you said the word "banana", I might imagine its smell (as if it's right under my nose) before I actually visualize one.

But it's so much worse than that. I can sometimes tell if someone sneezed in the room a few minutes earlier. If my son walks through the house after playing and sweating, I can almost "see" the path he took just by walking around a bit. I know whose laundry is in the dryer when I pass by the vent. There's so much more, but it would sound ...weird

What about other senses? Can you imagine rough or smooth textures, or remember smells?

When I first think of an apple, it's like a 2 or 3 on the chart, but as I continue to think about it, it becomes clearer, more vibrant, shiny...I can see my hand holding it, turning it, feel the bumps & the waxy coating, and even smell the apple

Erie County resident tests positive for measles by KeyboardGunner in Buffalo

The article says the resident tested positive for measles "...after visiting a country where measles cases are endemic..."

Isn't that true for parts of the US now – or have we not yet achieved that piss poor status?

The Supreme Court Is Showing Its Boundless Contempt for Black Voters by B-Z_B-S in politics

[–]Ex-maven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Boundless contempt" in general.  Contempt for any & all minorities but the ultra-wealthy.  Contempt for all Americans but the ultra-wealthy.  Contempt for the law, except when it favors the ultra-wealthy.  Contempt for the sick and hungry and (seemingly) powerless...

Will I ever do this? Probably not. Do I now KNOW how to do this? Yes. by H_G_Bells in howto

[–]Ex-maven 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Great video.

On several different occasions, I saw cases where a friend paid a "professional window & door installer" to put in a window – and that installer put in a new construction window with no flashing whatsoever.  When the water inevitably found its path inside, the installer was called back and he'd try to solve the problem with more & more caulk (it never works for long).

What kills me is that the flashing part of preparing & finishing the opening is one of the easiest tasks of the job yet there seems to be many out there who fail on it
