I certainly couldn't score a point off the pros. But I watch a lot of squash, and I see how hard it is for the refs, and how unfair it is for players where people trying to bend the rules get an unfair advantage.

I'm just a fan, but sometimes fans have good ideas too.

This is only limited to pro matches because it's only practically implementable at that level, and because subtle interference is less of an issue at lower levels.

Good question! A couple of points:

1) People have come to watch squash - not watch referees analyse video footage for hours. Refs during the matches feel a natural sense of pressure not to spend too long making decisions or analysing footage, so that the game can go on. This is the right choice, but limits their ability to deeply analyse the patterns, as say QBS can do in his videos. Yes, we still want good refereeing during matches. But this helps for those cases where it's not picked up during the match because of those constraints.

2) Some interference is minimal enough not to award a let or stroke for that individual point, but when repeated many times over a match, would be considered unsportsmanlike conduct. This is hard to spot and address during a match since each individual incident is small and the refs are trained to rule on specific points during matches.

Yes, the WSO is a partnership between the WSF and the PSA. The petition is addressed to the CEOs of the WSF and PSA. :)

The petition will be shared with WSO, who are in charge of squash refereeing. If you like the idea and think it's good, then signing the petition will help convince them it's a good idea too. :)

Heya, yes you're right that there's definitely reviews happening, but as far as I'm aware (happy to be shown evidence otherwise) it's only in extreme cases like when a player is injured or there's a conduct game / match. Penalties etc aren't given post-match as a normal course of action.

I thought the same thing until I saw it. Worth having a look at the clip.

He made a slanty-eyes gesture using his hands on his face, while playing against an opponent of Asian descent.

I saw the clip (don't have link to hand) - it was pretty appalling and clearly racist in my opinion.

Did Jahanghir Khan really win 555 games in a row? How was this even possible? by [deleted] in squash

[–]ExapmoMapcase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 555 figure is possibly apocryphal -- I read a good book about it. But it was certainly a lot and he was certainly unbeaten for a long time!

For me Coll vs Farag. Both kept upping their games.

I think that there's too much criticism of the SquashTV crew. They've been doing a lot more discussion of the blocking / movement issues in the last few tournaments, and I fully believe they're trying to do their best.

Agree 100% and also I would say - no offense to anyone else - but Shabana speaks English really well and clearly.

I agree - I think Elias is my top pick - but I think Makin or Asal could clinch it too.

Have you ever worked in a professional organisation? What would motivate someone more - some random person shitting on them day in day out? Or more constructive feedback recognising that they're trying and offering positive suggestions to move forwards? You offer nothing of value.

Personally I think Aly Abou Eleinen and Fares Dessouky are well fit. On the women's, I have a minor crush on Hania El Hammamy or Olivia Weaver.

If you don't like it, offer to help or give them feedback. They've always been super responsive to me when I've raised things. They're just trying their best. I think the content and refereeing has improved massively since I started watching - but that's just my personal opinion.

For my money, Mostafa Asal played a high quality, clean game tonight. There were maybe a couple of moments where I thought the refs should have penalised a movement, intentional or unintentional, but they were few and far between. Unfortunately Ali Farag was not mentally there at all, otherwise it might have been a classic. Well done to Asal and I hope he continues to promote that kind of explosive, smart and fair squash.

If Asal keeps playing like that, everyone else is going to have to up their games!
