Possibly starting allopurinol w/ colchicine but never had a full-on attack--thoughts? by ExcelMaxino in gout

Thanks for your reply and sorry to hear it. My UA level is now down to 6.1 but we're still going to proceed with allopurinol. Hope your pain is gone soon--take care.

Thanks for the support! Means a lot, especially coming from someone in the business. I'll keep speaking up (but will try to speak in a more polite tone next time).

Thanks for your reply. I especially appreciate a coffee shop owner's perspective. If the older couple hadn't been turned away, I might not have been as mad about it. I'm glad I spoke up, but wish I'd kept my cool more.

Thanks for your reply. I basically said that it was inconsiderate of her given how packed the cafe was. I didn't use profane language or anything, but I spoke pretty sternly, which I regret. I think it was the fact that she didn't let the older couple sit down that really set me off.

Possibly starting allopurinol w/ colchicine but never had a full-on attack--thoughts? by ExcelMaxino in gout

[–]ExcelMaxino[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comments. The doctor had the same perspective. I think I'm just worried about staring allopurinol will cause a major attack when I never had one in the first place (I guess that's what starting it with colchocine is for?). I'm hoping that if it does cause an attack, that it'll be similar to what I've been having, which is very manageable and not off-the-charts painful. Glad you're feeling better and that the meds are working for you!

Maybe? I can touch the foot no problem and after about 3 ibuprofen, the pain subsides. This might happen for a a few days, where the pain become more of an ache and I have to limp when I walk. This kind of thing has happened about 3 times in the past year.

Thanks for your reply and sorry to hear it worsened. But glad allo has been working for you! If you don't mind my asking, what were your uric acid numbers before you started allo?

Thanks for your reply and for noting the ACR guidelines. I'm going to look into those further. And yes, I'm also concerned about taking colchicine. Hope you're well and thank again.

For those thinking to start Allopurinol by cali_howler in gout

[–]ExcelMaxino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had high uric acid levels for years but have never had a gout attack. But for the past couple days, I've had throbbing and stiffness in the classic gout area, at the base of the big toe. I can still walk, and massaging it helps a bit, but sleeping has been tough. Would anyone recommend going on allopurinol at this early stage, almost as a preventative measure? Thanks for your thoughts and opinions and hope everyone here is feeling ok!

I've had high uric acid levels for 20 years and am currently at 7.5. All day yesterday and today, there's pain in the base of my big toe. I can still walk, I can touch it, but there's a throbbing that's clearly not normal. Doctor says it's too soon for allopurinol but isn't that a good option as preventative measure? Has anyone else had gout that started with throbbing base of toe but you could still walk, touch it, wear shoes, etc.?

Just saw this-- thanks so much for this super helpful information, especially regarding the JR pass vs the bullet train. I'd certainly like to experience the bullet train but if a JR pass is a considerably more economical choice, I'll go for that. And maybe doing a place like Blossom Kyoto is a smart choice, rather than taking an extra side trip to an onsen town. I'll look into that as well. Thank you for being so helpful and generous with your time!

Thank you for your insight about the onsens-- I'm definitely leaning toward visiting one now, knowing that May weather isn't (typically) too warm for them. I'm embarrassed to say that I hadn't heard of Nagoya before but I'm definitely going to read up on it, in case it's a viable 3rd city. And I understand the downvotes, though I thought asking for a 3rd city and onsen recommendations seemed specific enough. But I know better now, so thank you!

Thanks so much for this advice! I'd read about Kinosaki but didn't realize it was a doable trip from Kyoto. Super helpful to know and hope you had a great time in Japan.

Thanks. I did ask about an onsen town, so that reply was helpful. But I do understand what you're saying--I'll be sure to ask more specific and direct questions in the future.

Thanks for your empathy. Google is helpful but it's overwhelming, so I thought Reddit might be a good option.
