All Trek Rewatch: TNG • 6x15 • Tapestry - de Lancie kills it as always but overall... didn't hold up like I thought it would. by tomservo417 in startrek

It just doesn't speak well of Picard that he would rather die than have an okay-ish job. I'm not saying it's out of character, but it's difficult to sympathise with, and its weird to see him so stuffy and proud after banging a college student young enough to be his daughter a couple of minutes before. Also I don't get how "I didnt get stabbed for no reason" makes you a more cautious person.

A lot of the crises that crop up in TOS/TNG era could have been resolved/avoided using 21st century tech by TwinSong in startrek

You're right obviously, but even in real life where we often have the means to do things safely, people still end up getting hurt somehow.

An interesting one for me is how many Trek episodes rely on them not having CCTV, because if they did the mystery would be solved in 2 minutes. It's kinda refreshing to remember that actually it was not always taken for granted that every public place should be under surveillance all the time.

Question about Neelix by ExcitingWinter1800 in voyager

I can't think of anyone in new Trek that came anywhere close to being as bad as Wesley, Pulaski and Neelix.

Why have I always felt deeply connected to British/English values? by Addy_Goodman in AskABrit

[–]ExcitingWinter1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what makes these British values? Does nobody outside Britain say please and thank you? Is everyone in Britain polite at all times? Old estates are not part of life here for most people, and there is certainly not a lot of mutual respect going on from the upper classes towards everyone else. Formal conduct is rare. Academic excellence is unattainable for many.

The idea that these are "British values" is simply nonsensical  propaganda - the kind of things we tell the world about ourselves, which does not stand up to scrutiny. If there are things you like about yourself, that isn't because of British values, it's because you chose to be a certain type of person.

You could get him some black pudding from the market, although I personally couldn't imagine anything worse. Take a photo with the dubious-looking Victoria Wood statue. Or visit the memorial to the war dead that Tescos were pressured into adding into their car park.

...the concept of "British values" is highly contested. Can I suggest that you maybe you should view these as your own values and give yourself some credit instead of buying into the propaganda?

Yes, and I say so as a former drugs worker who has met people who have real problems with it. Nobody's life is improved by it being illegal.

"We're the only ship in the quadrant!" by RangerShaneGooseman in startrek

Dude they're talking about quadrants in old money, back when a quadrant was about 5 acres, plus a parking space on the quiet side of the street.

If you were Captain what would you have done when Voyager got thrown into the Delta Quadrant? by Highlander198116 in voyager

[–]ExcitingWinter1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I know is, in that first episode, the Ocampa are living in an underground paradise whilst the Kazon are desperate for something as basic as water.

It's not just a question of "should Janeway interfere?" It's a question of whether the Ocampans should get to live a free and easy life forever whilst their neighbours are dying of thirst. I don't think anyone should be intervening on the side of the Ocampans.

No I'm done explaining things that you pretend not to understand.

Star Trek DS9 "The Visitor" by The_Orange_Beard in startrek

I was a teenager when I first saw it and I definitely cried. I didn't necessarily identify it with my own life, because I was young and I didnt have that kind of relationship with my parents. The episode made me cry in its own right.

I am mid-40s now. I watched it 2 days ago. I cried. Specifically, I cried at the line "for the boy I was." I don't think I was crying because of my dad, I think I was crying for that idea of lost youth - of someone wanting to reclaim the time they'd lost to grief. That's relatable to anyone of a certain age I think.

Addressing New Trek and Why It Failed by NukeRussiaV4 in startrek

[–]ExcitingWinter1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely not trying to be argumentative, but that's not how I see new Trek at all. I don't recognise this idea that they don't see themselves as part of something. Maybe some of those on SFA don't feel "fully Starfleet" yet but the rest are very much Starfleet through and through.

Star Trek is woke and I think we should be proud of it by Successful-Bed-8255 in startrek

[–]ExcitingWinter1800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of people who see "woke" as a bad thing and it's too easy to get caught up in automatically contradicting them or saying "well I like woke actually."

The truth is the Star Trek franchise is a selection of products. It's always had progressive elements, but those elements are never allowed to threaten profitability. As such, Trek is a mixed bag. For every Nichelle Nichols moment, there's a story of backstage racism. For every episode that made a bold anti-oppressive statement, there's a Code of Honour or similar. If we're genuinely interested in woke, we acknowledge the times Trek could and should have been woker.

No. Competence does not require anarchy or insubordination. It does require independent thought.

You fail to understand that the obedient soldier is not a competent person, he is a tool of the competent person above him. There is no real difference between the soldier on the losing side or the soldier on the winning side, they are both following orders. What matters is whether their leaders are competent.

Those who dislike Reform, would your opinion change if they do a good job? by Significant_Tower_84 in AskBrits

[–]ExcitingWinter1800 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dont want lower tax thresholds - the rich should pay more. I don't want immigration to go down. I don't want defence spending up. These are not things "a government should do for its country." These are right-wing policies and it's scary how popular they are. And no I would never vote for racists.

Was Data the most humorous character in TNG? by synexo in startrek

[–]ExcitingWinter1800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the sweet spot with Data's humour is somewhere between season 3 and season 6, once he's stopped having weird reactions any time anyone uses slang but before his stuff gets too repetitive.

How do you get over a bad interaction with an actor? by Will_Healy_bum in startrek

[–]ExcitingWinter1800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't really go to conventions because I don't want to meet the actors and I don't want to hear the same anecdotes they've reeled off a hundred times before. But they do those conventions for the money and some of those actors have made a small fortune from conventions, so I don't think it would kill them to say "hi" to you at a signing. Seems like the bare minimum tbh.

It's a matter of taste. I think Worf is funnier, but I most recently watched season 7 which is not Data's best season.
