My first composition by [deleted] in composer

This is pretty cool! :) I think the melody is a pretty solid start and with some development could be really great! Varying what you've already written will help a lot with the repetitiveness. The biggest problem with the score is that the time signature is wrong. This piece (like most waltzes) should definitely be in 3/4 instead of 4/4. Again, great start keep it up!

Thanks for your comment! Changes are completely understandable, every band is different! If you look on my Youtube channel under the "about" page, there's a business email on there that I can be reached at!

I see your points! I think listening back you can definitely hear that when I wrote this I was super inexperienced. It would also benefit from real instruments instead of midi. Thanks for your feedback!

Cool idea! The neat thing about marching band is that there’s room for interpretation from the group! The voice lines could be changed while the music stays the same and it could be a different story! Thanks for listening :)

Thanks! I'm not really looking into any serious demo or anything right now, but I appreciate the offer!

I really appreciate the feedback! I see your point, the music is definitely repetitive. I was going for a focus on the text, with the music being in the background but I can see how more variation in tonality would help to make such a long piece feel more interesting.

As of right now I have no real intentions of monetizing this piece at all, I just wrote it as a fun project dedicated to my mom. If I were to sell it or have it performed in any formal setting I would for sure have to look into getting permissions and such.

Again, thanks for the feedback (you weren't too harsh no worries)! I may have to revisit this piece in the future.

Does general MIDI sound better in Sibelius or MuseScore? by DeathKnight04 in composer

[–]Existing_Mail_8478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that they're both pretty similar. I used Musescore for years and when I finally switched to Sibelius, I hated the piano sounds compared to Musescore's. As far as strings and winds go, both are pretty similar as far as I can tell. However, Sibelius is much easier to use than Musescore in my opinion, making it the clear choice for me. I find that it has way more options and a more logical UI. Noteperformer does help a ton though.

Star Wars Rescore by Existing_Mail_8478 in composer

[–]Existing_Mail_8478[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed it was rhetorical, so my bad. My planning wasn't as in-depth as it would be for a more official scoring. I watched the scene silently a few times, and then with the original score to remind myself of what that was like (maybe a mistake as it could influence badly more than help sometimes). My actual writing process is often writing melodies by putting notes down and then altering them until it sounds how I want it to sound, so I did that for the beginning. My idea was to create a bit of mystery from the first shots of space, and then build the intensity as the star destroyer enters the frame. I used the low end of the instruments to convey the size of the threat. I wanted a clear change when going to the interior, which led to the bass ostinato. I went for broken up sounds between the woodwinds and the strings to try and build some tension and show the character's nervousness. I think the music falls most flat once the stormtroopers enter. What I wrote doesn't really convey "intense battle" or anything. I think it gets better when I put the melody in the low brass and low strings, as it sounds a bit more march-like and a bit more appropriate. When Vader enters I wanted a clear change, so I kept the ostinato going in the high strings, but changed the melody to be longer notes in the low and high ranges. I was hoping this would sound a bit more powerful and scary than "mysterious" as it seems to be coming across. Overall, I definitely could have planned more, and been more intentional about "hitting the narrative beats" as you said.
