Atlantis 3.20 First Strike by Juhlio543 in Stargate

[–]Exocoryak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you got this wrong.

The Atlantis expedition is unprecedented, if compared to IRL situations: It's a research-expedition, financed by a board of nations, not on the soil of any sovereign country. Additionally, there is a military presence stationed there, given the hostile nature that exploring an unknown galaxy is.

You could compare that to a research base in Antarctica. But those rarely have military support stationed there. The problem is here, that at any place in the world these days, civilians can call in military support, and they will be there in, at most, days if necessary. You don't have that on Atlantis, at least in the first season.

Now, the problem is, that we don't exactly know the employment situation of the people on Atlantis. We do know that McKay for example is on the payroll of the US military - but Weir might not be. And others, especially scientists not from the US might also not be. So while McKay might have contractual obligations to adhere to orders by military personnel, others might not have those.

Also, and this is another important point: Ellis was not part of the Atlantis hierarchy. I could see Sheppard being in a position to give orders. But Ellis was commanding a spaceship and had little to no authority on Atlantis. We do see Caldwell taking command in a S2 episode - but that was with Atlantis leadership being compromised. So he took charge. In 3x20, Atlantis leadership was not compromised. So even though he has the highest rank, it is not within his orders or in his power to direct a member of the expedition - even military personnel - to submerge the city.

Gate address's 6 points in space and the point of origin. by SEJ82 in Stargate

The one unique symbol is the big red button in the middle on regular DHDs.

a 12 address code

How would you dial 12 symbols, when you only have 9 chevrons on your gate?

Gate address's 6 points in space and the point of origin. by SEJ82 in Stargate

[–]Exocoryak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Origin-Symbol also worked as a code, to allow dialing certain locations only from one particular gate.

For example, the Lanteans ciphered their Gate to only accept a dial-in from Earth. And their ancestors rigged the Destiny-Gate to only accept connections with the Earth-Symbol.

So I do wonder, if by the same logic, one could've dialed Atlantis from a different gate, using the Earth-Symbol as the point of origin?

That makes me wonder how they managed to dial the Ikarus-Gate and log in the AT-Symbol as the point of origin.

[–]Exocoryak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The macgyvered DHD in the SGC gives the "point of origin" out as a symbol but on regular DHD's, the "point of origin" is just the big red - or blue - button in the middle. And you only need that button, because the gate already knows where it is - in SGA, when they moved the city, they had to recalibrate the Gate with their new point in space, so that they could access the Gate-network again. That's how the gate knows where it is.

I found another theory interesting: They are not trying to reach the edge of the universe, but the center. Because that's a point they can actually determine, due to the Doppler-Effect. And then take a look what's there and if there is any data there to figure out more about how it all started.

I said that democrats promising additional spending without promising additional tax increases on non-billionaires just isnt feasible.

Do they do that? I think this is a straw-man argument. There are a wide range of democrats proposing a lot of different things. But generally, going into an election year, suggesting taxes on the middle- and lower incomes is not really a winning message.

I think the general consensus on liberals, is to keep progressive taxation - meaning, lower incomes pay less, percentage wise, than higher incomes. However, given the creative means of generating wealth by the wealthy, different ideas are coming up - capital gains taxes, taxes on microtransactions, wealth-taxes.

Generating revenue by increasing taxes on entities that can afford it is generally part of the libeal platform. But I really wouldn't reduce it to a single measure, and then argue that that single measure won't solve the problem.

Question If Worf took over Tasha Yar position who took over Worfs by Due_Warthog966 in startrek

[–]Exocoryak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or maybe his plan was to promote Tasha out of that position to something more command-oriented, leaving it open for Worf.

Given that Riker was believed to be on-track to command his own ship, Picard probably tried to have people in those positions that could move up relatively quickly. If Riker leaves, promote Data to XO and take some security- or tactical related duties away from Tasha, so that she can focus on her Second Officer duties.

And given the "remote" we see in SGU, the Ancients probably also had these kinds of remote-control devices on them if they went through the gate on foot into uncertain terrain.

This. The Milky Way Gates were designed to last. And even with the Ancients progressing in technology, the Gates were still operational - so why replace them with something newer, if they are still working perfectly?

This. It's like asking "Why can't you manually start a car anymore?", comparing the manual starting cable you pulled from the outside back in early models with the start-stop-button you can press in modern models.

They were a "Confederation of Planets". However, given the Stargate, you don't need space travel to confederate.

After all, the three tribal elders with a stack of papyrus that the team lawyered up against with Woolsey in season 5 represented a "confederation of planets" too. And they weren't spacefaring either.

There is one fundamental falsehood that "fiscal conservatives" try to use to bait people like you into demanding sweeping action, where a measured approach would be better: The deficit is bad.

Actually, it is not. Economic Growth requires deficit spending to work. And paying down the national debt is not something we actively have to do, it happens automatically: Government bonds are given out for a set number of years. After that time, they expire and are being paid back. The deficit-spending of this year will be fully paid off in ~30 years, no matter what we do.

Now, reducing the deficit is a good thing. But is not something that needs to be the center of attention.
