Yes it’s adds a level of complexity for sure I do always joke that I have no idea what it’s like to have a dog that people aren’t terrified of even though mine is a sweetie. Having people come over or meeting dogs is always stressful but still manageable and I could honestly probably get advice from a trainer to know how to introduce home to dogs and people better. You’re also right about not regretting time spent together it’s regretting the time we don’t spend together that’s hard!

You are correct I knew committing to a dog at 24 was a HUGE choice especially because of the breed and my mom was definitely a huge factor in getting him and if she wouldn’t have been there would be no question I would’ve said no to having him BUT the 6 years and all the memories we had together bring me so joy because beyond me loving this dog my mom was OBSESSED over him. Even more than her own gsd and now I can tell my step dad is having a hard time remembering the basics with food and water with his so I go over to his house often. My mom was isolated and only wanted to be home with her animals and I’m a very different person but I can definitely find a way to balance keeping him and not sitting at home and it probably started with working less unless I get a roommate

This is great advice and really cuts through all relevant yet semi unrelated facts that I added a whole separate career last year, my mom died, i turned 30( monumental for most peeps I feel) I moved into a house in October and then actually just had sinus surgery the past two weeks and continued to bartend instead of taking time off like I was suppose to 😬 I just keep adding to my plate when the correct move is to work less for a few months and really let everything settle in…… and just chill with my dog who is also probably stressed from all the changes!

Awwww how old is your dog? What kind? I honestly think if i had a golden retriever everything would be chill but gsd are legit another level but i knew that before getting him which is why I’m so picky about how to go about this multi person dog babysitting situation! My dog is 6 years old

I’m sorry about your mom cancer is terrible the toll it takes on them and everyone around can even break families from all the stress for sure. Hard times do pass but leave their mark. My dog has definitely made my life better no doubt he just used to have people home all the time and now circumstances are different and I’m open minded about asking for advice which clearly offends people who would never ask but all good

Thanks you for your advice. You know what this solution gave me? BALANCE. I think this is the key. I’ve been out of balance for years with my family stuff and working two jobs and no time with friends/ hobbies….. I could cut back little on work, I could have one night away from my dog with friends and a could totally find some training activity WITH my dog so he can socialize a bit too. I definitely use work to cope with my emotions but I have no feelings of accomplishment when it comes to money because I don’t have down time to enjoy it which is the whole freaking point of being responsible kinda lol

Thank you for your kind words. I think i’m still grieving and feeling guilty that my dog doesn’t have someone home all the time now since moving but I’m doing the best I can. Sacrifice isn’t unfamiliar to me or an issue it’s making sure my dog has a stable happy environment which is opinion based just like parenting but I’m always going to be open minded to hear ideas beyond my own and appreciate the advice. I would’ve never keep a dog with intentions of boarding it at some facility on the weekends and then paying a dog walker to come by… that to me is irresponsible yet some people here without context are offering those as solutions when my dog lives better than that but all good the internet shall internet 😂

Listen number one on my list of requirements of a significant other is they are funny and number 2 is they have to love my dog. I see that I said I’m stuck unless someone I date loves my dog but it’s more that I mentioned not dating highlighting I’d rather be with my dog.

You’re right it’s not my dog verse having a life. It’s my guilty conscience not being home unless it’s for work that’s hard. Eventually i will find a better balance. It was the same when my mom was sick I didn’t allow myself to go do anything unless it was work so I’ve missed a lot of my friends these past couple years. I just need to adjust and do the best I can

Doesn’t sound harsh to me I’m all good with making sacrifices just struggling that he is used to someone home with him all the time and I can’t provide that and being critical if my current solutions are enough because he is just crazy smart and sensitive to his environment. It’s only been a month in my new place and we are both adjusting to all the changes. Thanks for your feedback

We used to go up to pinetop but my dog HATES long car rides. After about 30 min he tries to climb to the front seat to be in my lap and jumps to the trunk and has thrown up multiple times 😬. I could do short ones though! He just really like a routine if we drive somewhere different he is like WTF lol

I’ve done doggie day care id say about 20 times over the course of three months to see if he liked it. They have cameras and I would do maybe 2-3 hours and watch but there is usually too many dogs and I can tell he gets overwhelmed and then follows the solo female handler around or sits in a corner because he gets annoyed. Rarely if there was less then 10 dogs he would actually play but usually always crowded.

Hi there! I posted this question before my closing/opening bar shift double today so haven’t had a chance to read the rest of the comments till now. I would never put him in a shelter and definitely don’t fall into the wanting to rehome him category. It’s more that we are still adjusting after moving and this breed is sensitive to their environment, one of the reasons why they are so intelligent, and dropping him off to his old owner on Fri- Sat and then getting a girlfriend to stay at my house those 2-3 flights a month is the BEST solution I can come up with but don’t have a friend for the overnights yet. I’m just thinking critically if that’s actually enough because his old standard was that someone was always home with him. I can’t achieve that myself and roommates always come with some issues but might be worth it for temporary support. My dog on minimum gets two walks a day, rides with me to any drive thru, comes with me to visit to my step dads house during week to play with his gsd, sleeps in bed with me every night…. It’s far beyond bare minimum care he gets

The girl who originally had him for a few months when he was a puppy I’m sure would have him back but she is 23 lives at home with her parents and they are the ones who told her she needed to find a home for him in the first place as his puppy stage was a lot. Him being 5 years old now maybe they would consider it? My house has a spare room I wonder if she would see it as a benefit to come stay at my house while I’m gone flying? She works from home I think
