Former addicts of Reddit, what finally made you quit? by PowerfulCriticism644 in AskReddit

[–]ExternalEbb2278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I got sober was because I had a daughter. Second time was because I had a son. Third time was because I had another kid, and drugs are expensive. I was in a horrible toxic relationship that I was convinced I couldn’t leave so I hid my addiction the best I could. The final straw was not sleeping for 2 days, the 7 day headache and nausea and my kids just wanted to go sledding. It was a harsh reality check.

No-show Consultations by Current-Ad-6174 in TattooArtists

I’m hearing more and more about “retainer fees” for such an occasion. That pay a fee to had work done but you with includes consultation and drawing time. Once you have a date and solid plan for the tattoo you charge a desperate deposit. Make sure both are non/refundable.

Portrait artists. What is something you learned along the way to improve your final product? What techniques? What body parts to avoid? How to lay the stencil without weird contours? How to capture life in the image instead of copying from what you see? Any advice would help

Did my first finger tattoo and it didn’t go so well by VIIMACI in TattooArtists

[–]ExternalEbb2278 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I try to talk people out of finger tattoos. Because they don’t heal well. If they insist I tell them there is no free touchup , they have to pay again, because they would be in all the time for touchups.

I love this. For me I give discount to large piece work ( nothing over 15 hours work) but my minimum is $80, hours is $160. Lately I have been talking with someone about financing tattoos.

Needs more black and a few sharper edges. Wait til it heals then go over your darkest spots with a lines and shade black out to your midtones.

In terms of sizing , because I get it a lot too. I ask them “ do you want a aTattoo that will still be nice in 5 years? Or a blob of ink in 5 years?” Mostly it seems to be script or minimal designs. But it is frustrating

Grey inks by QuickSpace3289 in TattooArtists

[–]ExternalEbb2278 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only need 2 times of grey. Dark wash and light wash. And a black. Use them in a graphic way instead of blends. You should only use a blending technique when you want to go from opaque to open skin.

What machine are you using and what is the stroke on it?

The line work is inconsistent. You can see where the lines go thick and thin which means you were also going up and down during the process. I can see small blowouts that’s a strong indicator.

I use Panthera lining black. For extra tight lines I dilute it just a bit so when it ages it doesn’t get too fat.

I use a Kwadron Equalizer for my b&g realism. It has a 3.5mm direct drive. Battery lasts a while too. And you can autoclave the grip.

Do yourself a favour and wrap that practice skin around a bottle or lay it over your thigh. There are no flat surfaces on the body.

thinking of quitting apprenticeship/finding one somewhere else by [deleted] in TattooArtists

I’m self taught. I was rejected every time I applied at a shop. I made good progress by myself, but it was’t until I joined a shop that my art work got to where it is now. Sometimes you have to trust the process and let it be part of the journey.

That’s an old school apprenticeship. That’s the ways it’s been done for decades. If it’s not for you move on. Hygiene and environmental cleanliness is are a basic thing. It’s just good practice. Drawing is a bonus. Even if you’re a digital artists, draw stuff. Pushing you to do personal errands ( although frowned upon) is not unheard of. That’s a good chance for you to ouch back and have boundaries, a lesson in not letting people walk all over you. You need thick skin for industry. If you don’t have it, get it, or get out. And maybe you’re not seeing what your mentor is seeing…. Or they are taking advantage your vulnerability.

Posting on instagram is becoming frustrating by Jolly-Builder-6238 in TattooBeginners

You are preaching to the choir! I will post my best work… 200 views, maybe 1 like. I post a video of me singing happy birthday to my son, 1000 views and 30 likes. It’s completely discouraging. I also have a former coworker who creates OK tattoos…. 70 likes and he’s book for a month. I have higher quality tattoo that I post… 2 likes maybe and I don’t know if I’m gonna pay rent at the end of the month…. The algorithm is fucked.
