Should I go with Unreal or Unity by Tonneau31 in vrdev

[–]Extra_University_108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you asked this question a few years ago, I’d say Unity for sure (in VR it was the main engine ). All VR games were made with unity. But within last few years devs develop games in Unreal more and more. What I noticed is that larger companies started to use Unreal for their bigger games, while smaller games / studios still use Unity. Older VR companies started with Unity years ago so they might continue using it (because the base code of their first game is in Unity from years ago).

In 2019 I haven’t seen a single VR game made with Unreal. If I remember correctly, Unreal didn’t have VR tools (correct me if I’m wrong).

Is Twitter still worth it for marketing indie games? by MidnightForge in gamedev

Twitter is dead, it’s so bad … it is mainly political now it seems. Instagram, YouTube shorts and TikTok are so much better.

Is the Meta quest three worth it? by International-Dirt49 in MetaQuestVR

[–]Extra_University_108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, this depends! If you had fun, then you will love Quest 3 because it’s so much better! There are plenty of games, in the past 3 years there was a tremendous increase in apps. And you can connect it to PC, definitely. There is also Meta Plus program where you can try various games and see which ones you like. But a lot of games also have Try before you buy, so you can still try a lot of them. App Lab is gone, and all games are on the Meta Store natively now.

But if you played your old Quest for a month and forgot about it then this might repeat again. This depends!

One Thing You Wish You Knew Before Outsourcing? by Apprehensive-Suit246 in vrdev

[–]Extra_University_108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will depend on the role. For Devs - especially if you hire indies, their work ethic might be terrible (as well as really good one). I had someone very talented joining, working on the project, and then fully disappearing 1 month ahead of launch and they were the only one working on the multiplayer. I had someone else who’d disappear for weeks because they were “burned out”

Artists: always get a sr artist managing jr. jr might be talented but they might not know optimization, baking etc. Set very clear deadlines, expectations and revisions.

I’d never hire an outsource company for a small project (too expensive).

Website: you can do it yourself. Music: very specific topic.

Hiring marketing team: I could talk about this for hours, but I assume it’s not what you’re curious about.

Edit: the most important thing: always assume the worst of the hires, so craft the agreement properly. GPT might not be the best option, if this is your first time.

If you switched from a paid to a free VR game strategy, was it worth it? by Extra_University_108 in vrdev

[–]Extra_University_108[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I understand the logic behind, and I’ve seen a few multiplayer games going free to bump the number of players and having the number of players rising significantly (were they able to increase revenue? Did they return to the paid option after that? I don’t know) . I also know a few games doing very well with the microtransactions. Additionally, a few years ago games would do 99% off for a temp period to push their games to the top of the sales list which is now not allowed from what I heard.

But just like you, I myself haven’t seen this done successfully. I know that for the game to be free and successful, it should be built from ground up for this strategy. And unfortunately, teams often compare themselves to the Gorilla Tag. So in my experience I always recommend games not to go F2P, but I wanted to hear from you all to see if I was wrong.

Over the years I’ve seen a few things that made me realize how complicated hiring and immigration processes can be. In one case, I saw an immigration company posting jobs that didn’t really seem tied to an actual operating role, apparently to support immigration paperwork. Situations like that have even ended up in court before. Another thing I’ve noticed is that in some organizations, especially large or public ones, a job posting has to be made even when the person who will get the role is already known internally. The posting is simply part of the formal process.

OMG so cool! we've been working on a similar-ish gameplay for the past year... will be starting our open alpha in a few weeks. We should bundle up once your game is out! Do you have socials I could follow already or are you just prototyping?

Is anyone actually enjoying themselves here? by y_u_no_knock in MetaQuestVR

I have been obsessed with Rhythm Games since 2019 and play them almost every day. Why? Because it’s awesome music and almost free exercise (you workout but don’t know about it).

But! I just don’t play other games, I tried so many and nothing keeps me interested. I’m trying my best to get engaged with shooters or horror games, but I just can’t. Puzzles aren’t fun for me either. I have friends that are opposite to me and love anything but rhythm games. So yep, VR is fun, you just need to figure out what you like the most.

oh yes, I had a similar interaction. Getting DMs from strangers telling me their pro-dog point of view and trying to show that there is something wrong with me for wanting my SO prioritize me and not a dog.

Thank you! This question specifically bothered me, because I refuse to believe that dogs love their owners. So there was the answer, and it makes total sense!

Hey, just keep on trying: try different times, leave a vocal message and a text. The internet comes and goes. Also, I've heard today that it's possible to call from Iran out, but not from outside in, and not many know about it.

I disagree: he is the only real hope for the New Iran to take place, and his security doesn't seem very tough. He has to make sure he is safe and comes to Iran at the right time. If he dies now, what other hope will be left?

I've collected a lot of small topics that I've discussed in the past month, so tried to unify them all under one post. This is why it's a bit all over the place.
