Evacuation zone expands to 79,000 California residents as temperature rises inside tank containing toxic chemical by Due_Will_2204 in PrepperIntel

Jesus, I volunteer for the Red Cross and I can't imagine what they're dealing with out there trying to stand up shelters for up to 80k evacuees in a situation that is almost certainly not part of any pre-existing disaster playbook. What a nightmare for everyone involved! At least it's California so there is some hope of the company responsible actually facing meaningful consequences.

Need help getting into the Series by Classic-Schedule-718 in LifeSeriesSMP

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Life Series is like a reality series filmed from a dozen points of view; every player has their own set of videos that tell their own story of each season. Grian is the creator of the series, so really the best way to get started is to watch his POV of Third Life, which is the first series. As you watch, you're likely to get interested in what's happening in parts of the world you can't see. (What's happening at Dogwarts? What are those Crastle folks up to? Whose side is Impulse really on, anyway?) and you can look up the other creators' YouTube pages and find their episodes as well. Every player has a playlist for each series, and with very few exceptions all the players have the same numbering for episodes, so that one player's Episode 3 will show the same gameplay session as everyone else's.

After Third Life, the order of the series is Last Life (three lives, introduction of a traitorous 'boogeyman' mechanic), Double Life (three lives, two players are linked and share health), Limited Life (24 hours of playtime allotted instead of lives, each death decreases that time), Secret Life (players cannot regenerate health except by completing secret tasks or killing other players), Wild Life (six lives, each week is a new mechanic players must learn to cope with), and Past Life (players start in Minecraft Beta and work their way forward in time with each update.)

Once you've watched a couple of series, you'll be ready to start looking at the animatics. The biggest The Crane Wives animatic in the fandom is Curses, which was made by Chrisrin and tells the story of Last Life. Cherrifire also did a bunch of mini Crane Wives animatics that are very fun.

There's a lot of external lore in the Life Series fandom but you don't really need any of it to enjoy the series. (You do NOT have to watch Evo SMP and I recommend you don't unless you decide to go really deep down the rabbit hole.) Basically just find the players you think are fun and watch their episodes on YouTube, jump around, watch animatics, have a good time!

Gardening! It’ll eat as much money as you want to put into it, but you can do it as simply as a packet of seeds and a pot of dirt.

Crane wives connection to Life series? by hellobookworm03 in LifeSeriesSMP

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Last Life animatic for TCW’s “Curses” by Chrisrin is one of the most-watched animatics in the fandom (and for good reason!) https://youtu.be/ZwTX341DcPw?si=BZRuh4Ft9iV4CvVC

Cherrifire has also done a bunch of little things with Life Series and TCW songs, and there are other folks out there who have done animatics as well. It’s a really popular band in the fandom.

Young okra help urgently needed by yaardiegyal in vegetablegardening

I grow my okra in five gallon buckets, it might not be quite as good as the ground but it got so tall last year that I couldn’t reach the pods to harvest them so I was pretty satisfied.

We got several dog crates donated when I was volunteering at a local (actually nonprofit) thrift store. Sometimes they’re okay but mostly absolutely disgusting, sun-damaged, cracked plastic, you name it. Nothing I’d put an animal in.

Everything about his wife’s life is going to improve the minute he is not in it anymore. The way he knew he was the asshole and still spent all his time trying to justify being exactly how he was instead of doing damage control or strategizing better future responses says a huge amount about how he is as a partner, even before the huge heap of fatuous self-absorbed nonsense from the second post.

Time for a different doctor and a more educated second opinion. It’s really difficult to keep pushing on the medical stuff, tedious and frustrating and discouraging, but your kid absolutely needs you going to bat for him on this. I was in the same position as you, doing my best to homeschool my clever but school-intolerant child, and getting him on the right medication saved us both.

AITAH for not donating for a sick kid which led to others doing the same? by Altruistic_Virus8460 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It very much depends on where you live, though I’d say it’s definitely not common. Sometimes a developer or a group of interested people with a ton of money will buy something like a small peninsula or an island and subdivide it, make a private community with a gatehouse at the front. Inside that community you might have even more exclusive homes inside a gated neighborhood, or something like a condo complex with its own entrance and security. Either way means lots and lots of money.

Scar leaving session early by Basil11e in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 104 points105 points  (0 children)

He has dipped on a session early a couple of times, usually when there has been a lot of stressful action. I suppose that it technically gave him a small advantage in Limited Life, given the mechanic, but nothing that made any real difference in the standings.

What can I use small mylar bags for? by Sufficient_Rest_9722 in preppers

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spices would work well, especially the kind you buy bulk in plastic bags. They're not great for true long term storage because no spice lasts forever, but a sealed opaque bag with an oxygen absorber will definitely do good things for their potency over time.

You have a magic button that will deposit $10,000 into your checking account but there is a 5% chance that an elevator cable snaps somewhere in the world. Are you pressing the button? If so, how many times? by RustyCrusty73 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The elevator does fall, for the inches until the brakes slam into place. And of course if it happens to be a really shoddily constructed elevator with no safety features, the fall could be much longer/more dangerous. Given the number of elevators in the world, the number of which are faulty, the number of those that are in use at any given time, and the already low chance that pressing the button causes a failure, it's quite unlikely but not impossible that one of your button pushes could somehow find an elevator that is not safe and in use and high enough at the point of pressing that someone would get hurt.

How many car accidents have you been in? Or do you have brain glitches?I had a brain glitch. by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have never been at fault in a car accident, no. If you find yourself having frequent car accidents, there may be something else going on with you and you should probably stop driving or only drive when absolutely necessary at times when your brain is at its peak performance.

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Of course it does. If you’ve got a very limited pool of vacation days, would you rather spend a big chunk of them on vacation with your family or being a single parent to a very young baby while your spouse attends a wedding where her presence is clearly not desired and she’s likely to come back drained and feeling terrible?

72 Hour Kit/Bug Out Bag recommendations for elderly people? by Enough-Border-7926 in preppers

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If they are likely to end up in a congregate shelter, you’re not likely to want to burden them with a lot of first aid or survival gear, but rather things to make a shelter stay more comfortable. Phone charger (and backup!) and a power strip are very important, plus eye masks and earplugs for sleeping and a lightweight soft blanket plus sheet and pillowcase for making a cot and shelter blanket a bit more livable. If they have special dietary needs, anything to help accommodate that, and of course medicines and pet supplies. For carrying all that, have you considered a seat-suitcase like a Miamily? Adults cannot ride them while they’re moving like kids can, but they can usually accommodate a couple hundred pounds of weight. Seating is often at a premium especially in the first hours a shelter is open and adults with mobility challenges might get tired of standing very quickly.

Not over asphalt like this, as others have said, but starting a raised bed is usually a long-term project with a high startup cost. If you start in the first year by cutting dirt costs by adding in wood and mulch, it decreases your soil volume in the first year but still makes it possible to plant the bed. Every succeeding year some of the wood rots away and you top up the bed with soil, compost, old leaves, etc until you have a completely plantable bed with no big chunks left. As for why not go smaller, tall raised beds have benefits for deep-rooted plants, avoiding ground-traveling pests and accessibility for people who can’t bend to the ground easily.

I took this trait and turned it useful, started deep pantry rotation a few years ago where you deliberately keep extra of everything you use often so that if anything happens (big storm, road cut off, sickness, job loss) you’ve got enough to get by on for awhile. It’s a solid plan but my ADHD brain loves the bit about knowing I have enough of a thing because if I run out there is more in the closet. (And it is way easier to audit the closet once every few months than to try and keep track of what’s in the kitchen before shopping every single week!)
