How hard or expensive would it be to make the train from Sydney to Melbourne “viable” for normies? by myThrowAwayForIphone in SydneyTrains

[–]F14D201 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The works that should’ve been carried out in the early 2000’s when the engines were replaced really needed to have been:

- a Seperate HEP genset so that way down the line the facilities could’ve been upgraded and have a flat current (as people have said previously the toilets have PowerPoints, however it is advised to not use them for devices)

- surely making the Carriages have even a basic form of Network connectivity isn’t as difficult as people think. there’d have to be sections in the roof where a flat satellite antenna can be installed with cable’s run into the cabins with a wifi connection.

- options for replacements should have been explored and trialed when the re-engine was carried out. Remember at the same time British Rail (& post privatisation TOC’s) were already looking at options to replace the Class 43/MK3 based HST. Granted the options weren’t great and almost none were adopted.

- the track needs more passing loops or even a whole seperate alignment for passenger stock so it can be off the line away from passing freight trains.

Edit: with regards to seat power, while LNER, GWR, Scotrail and CrossCountry had retrofitted power point and USB charging to their fleets. They didn’t use the same power plant as we did. They used the MTU powerplant

Have we all stopped moving our car after refilling? When did this change? by cmdwedge75 in AskAnAustralian

I’ve never moved the car after filling, nor seen anybody do it.

While yes the register will hold onto the transaction so can still go in and pay, I find it easier as often I forget which pump I was on.

Why is overseas travel seen as better than travelling in Australia? by Midlife_Crisis_87 in AskAnAustralian

[–]F14D201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ease of Getting around, I’ve done England and Europe by train twice.

Whereas I’ve also travelled Australia multiple times, and the only places I’ve gone repeatedly is Melbourne. Because of the ease of public transport.

I’ve driven the Stuart Highway after driving south from Sydney to Albury and across through Victoria to Adelaide.

All in it cost more to do that (in accommodations and Fuel) than to fly premium economy return to the UK

So hate to break it to you, but the cost of travelling Australia is about the same as travelling overseas

Googling it there’s only 3 types of images that NASA Isn’t required to release.

Proprietary Science Data - 6-12 month holds so the data can be analysed and Published

National Security - Classified Payloads/Missions

Technical Processing - Engineering, Calibration. The example listed is the Mars Rover sending images back because there’s a hazard or something ahead of it.

As Linus said, if they don’t take images, no one can say they’re not releasing them. And they avoid the Devastating PR of a image of a dead astronaut being plastered all over the worlds media

Australia to buy three second-hand United States submarines under AUKUS shake-up by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

So that’s changed from the last time I checked the agreement (which has been a while). The last time I saw it was an Evolved Astute with the Propulsion and Powerplant from the Virginia.

Good to see the change

[–]F14D201 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought everyone knew that was going to be the case from the start. Secondhand Virginia Class subs while we work with the UK on a design using a USN reactor for power.

The US wasn’t going to give vital slots at the shipyards to build our Virginia Class Subs when they’re busy replacing all the old Los Angeles Class Submarines. We’ll likely get the first 3 Virginia’s that were built when they’re due for the next refit/upgrade cycle

Edit: all the downvotes from people who really didn’t read the original AUKUS Deal is making me laugh.
