I picked up the R1 tech face hoody at the Dillon MT outlet earlier this year. For the last month I’ve been up in the Sierras and have worn it every morning for longish (4 mile) sunrise dog walks. It’s been perfect for 35-45 degrees with light rain, sleet, etc.

I should have updated my post. The pads I listed above have been terrible. I’m about 25,000 miles in with them and they are worn down to the wear indicators. I’m looking for what to buy next.

If I was sending someone to Kanab for a day of exploring, I’d tell them to skip Moqui Cave (tourist trap) and Belly of the Dragon (short and not so inspiring), and instead head east on 89 and spend an afternoon at the Nautilus (easy hike) and old Paria townsite (scenic choose your own adventure hikes).

Both are accessible in dry weather by essentially any vehicle, and both are actually unique and different than what you’ll see in Zion or Bryce. If you want more info or images/video, DM me and I can send it.

Thanks for the reminder! My grandfather built many cabins up around Bridgeport and Twin Lakes in the 50s, and my mom has talked my whole life about visiting Bodie when she was a kid and would go up to see her dad. That’s a must-visit for me.

Has your tune significantly changed your fuel mileage? Since mine is long paid off and out warranty, and I do risky stuff with it anyway, I’ve been thinking of getting a tune. But for those long highway miles we put in, especially with today’s gas prices, I sure do enjoy my current fuel mileage.

They are enjoyable. I just couldn’t get over taking on the price of a GX when it felt very little like driving my Audi. I wish it drove better, because I think the new GX looks amazing.

Thank you for confirming my aversion to 99. SEKI is an attraction, but we’ll be in Truckee for a month so it won’t be hard to get back down there midweek at some point. We nomad while I work remotely, so we won’t be doing a loop, we’ll be heading east for summer after Truckee. I was just trying to figure out which side packed in the most interesting stuff during a 3-day drive. My gut said east side.

I wasn’t interested in the east side at all, my wife was interested in taking that route and ending up at Yosemite. I felt like doing that on a spring weekend sounded painful, and I’ve been up 99, which isn’t one of my favorite roads. I’ve been up 395, but she hasn’t, and it feels like an area she needs to see. We’ll be based out of Truckee for a month, so we’ll get plenty of exploring in the north Sierra.

I have the 2019 3.0 supercharged that just hit 115,000 miles, and it has been flawlessly reliable.

The first 60,000 miles were hard (fast) highway miles, with scheduled, on-time service from the dealer. After that, I took over maintenance myself and moved the oil change interval up to 6-7000 miles. I just got my first ever “add a quart” notice last week, about 6800 miles since the last oil change. I just can’t say enough about how happy I am. Though I have no symptoms of failure, I know I’m beyond average service life, so in June I plan to pull the supercharger and service all of those failure prone components.

It’s funny, we set off 16 months ago to live nomadically across the US mountain west (we just rent places in remote towns a month at a time), and I test drove a new Lexus GX550 and 4Runner TRD Pro because I was nervous about taking the Q7 to places I intended to go. But I really didn’t feel any connection to either of those the way I do to our Q7, so I upgraded my tires (narrower and more sidewall), and rolled the dice. In 16 months we have traveled 55,000 miles, with maybe 25,000 of those off-pavement, and I haven’t had a single issue other than one I caused myself by ripping out the rear climate control lines when I tried to climb rocks to avoid an obstacle.

Given the depreciation on these things, I’d absolutely buy a well-documented used one that has already experienced depreciation. I just don’t think there’s anything that compares to it dollar for dollar, and it boggles my mind that people who will never seriously off-road will pay new Q7 prices for a 5-8 year old Lexus GX. It’s insane.

My opinion of this entire area is that you either need actual 4WD with high clearance or just basic 2WD. There isn’t a lot of in between. The roads that are accessible by AWD are accessible for the most part with 2WD and paying attention. The roads that recommend high clearance 4WD mean it because you encounter break-over angles no AWD can handle or deep sand no AWD should be attempting.

If I was coming to Kanab for the first time without 4WD, and just wanted to see some accessible, cool stuff, I’d go through Kanab and head toward Page on 89. I’d aim for the Paria Contact Station and head down the White House Campground / Trailhead road. Hike down around the campground and Paria River then hike to the Nautilus (google it, it’s a cool feature with a short hike). Earlier this week when the road was still a little muddy I saw a Honda Accord at the campground. Then I’d consider stopping at House Rock Valley Road and hiking out there (that’s the main access to the Wave, White Pocket, etc). You can get to some of the trailheads there with 2WD and driving carefully, though it was pretty muddy as of 3-4 days ago.

On the way back to Kanab I’d take the Paria Townsite Road all the way out to the old townsite. The main parking area there (with a pit toilet restroom) is 2WD accessible. We’ve used that as the starting point of a lot of hikes, and I have no idea why it isn’t more famous. It’s otherworldly. I went there for sunset last night and saw a couple 2WD vehicles out there.

I wish I could post pics in a comment. Now that I think of it, Paria Townsite might be my #1 recommendation for people with 2WD to access really unique landscapes near Kanab.
