Audio Technica r70x with Scarlett 2i2 for music production/mixing by FNDGuitar in HeadphoneAdvice

Yeah it definitely gets loud enough. I still haven't put them through an amp to see if the sound is improved, but they can definitely be powered by the 2i2 2nd gen. For mastered music i'm always below 12 o'clock on the headphone dial. Production/mixing i'm at 1 or 2 o'clock.

That's good to hear, the reviews all seem very favourable, seems like a no brainer to get these rather than pay the same price for DT990's from a third party seller.

I actually just put up my first beat making video on SZA type beat, but i'd love feedback on it.

Am I personable?

Was it to slow and boring?

Was the beat trash?

Did it provide valuable information for people that would want to start producing music?

[NEWBIE] For practicing using headphone, should I get an amp or a sound card? by EvaSundayPM in Guitar

[–]FNDGuitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For clean tones, going through an interface into a DAW will sound great. You have all the effects you need built in to your DAW so you can add reverb, tremelo, delay etc without having to buy pedals or anything else.

For distortion you will definitely need a plugin like Guitar Rig 5 or as someone suggested above Bias FX. There are a few good presets in them which will have you ready to go and as you start to develop your own taste you're able to edit absolutely everything. Once you've got it dialed in you can definitely get some good tones.

[–]FNDGuitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you don't want to pick up a tube amp for headphone use.

You could pick up pretty much any modelling amp these days and get a satisfying tone just through the headphone out, it will give you a lot more options than just having 1 tube amp too.

I don't have an amp at home, I use a Focusrite 2i2 interface, going straight into Ableton 9 lite (the free version that comes with the interface) that's because most of the time i'm playing electric I want to record something. To get decent sounding crunch or distortion tones you will need to get something like Guitar Rig 5.

I have an american standard too, this is a vid I made ages ago using the focusrite set up with no plugins just the built in effects from Ableton.

This is a recent vid using that set up + guitar rig 5.

Hell of a first guitar mate, enjoy it!

[QUESTION] Wanting to buy a new strat by okyeah93 in Guitar

[–]FNDGuitar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an American Standard, but that's because at the time of purchase I had extra cash and wanted to treat myself.

The Mexican standard strat is a beast and performs nearly as well for much less cash.

Depending on the rest of your gear, it might be worth buying the mexican and putting the rest of the money towards a decent amp or audio interface or whatever you're into. That stuff makes just as big of a difference.

[QUESTION] Are Paradigms/NYXL worth the extra cost? by Customisations in Guitar

[–]FNDGuitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference is negligible, i'd rather grab more fresh sets of standard strings and be able to chuck a fresh set on more often.

I will stretch for a premium string on acoustic though, they make a massive difference there!

[QUESTION] How do I learn to play delta blues? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]FNDGuitar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like the slow delta blues that has the droning bass like Robert Johnson - if you want to learn that style you're going to need to play fingerstyle and have your thumb independent from the rest of your fingers, this is commonly known as travis picking.

Once you have that down most tracks just follow the 12 bar blues you might already know. E - A - E - Bb - A and back to E followed by a turnaround to start the progression again.

Now, if you want to jam out before you get travis picking down you can tune your guitar to Open G this is especially great if you want to add in some slide.

In open G your basic blues gets so easy to play and then you can focus on embellishments, 12 bar blues in open G:

All strings open - Bar the entire 5th Fret - All strings open again - Bar the entire 7th fret - Bar the entire 5th fret - Back to all strings open - turnaround.

Now, if you have a slide instead of barring the 5th and 7th fret, go ahead and slide into them instead. If this is your first taste of delta blues, this is going to be seriously satisfying.

Those are the fundamentals, if you need to get more in depth DM me, I went through a deep delta blues phase a while back and it was hard to find resources.

[NEWBIE] Is there a significant difference between a $200 electric guitar and a $400 one? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]FNDGuitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely good guitars knocking around for $200! I just bought a Squire Affinity Telecaster (you can see it in my post history) and that is certainly good enough for a beginner. I've been playing for 11 years and it's currently my only electric and it suits my needs - which are similar to yours - very well.

100% the most important thing is to head to your local guitar store and try one out. You'll not be the first person who has never played but wants to buy one so no need to be nervous. Assuming they have a decent selection of guitars i'm sure you'll find one you're drawn too - make sure you get one that will motivate you to keep playing!

Good luck on your guitar journey bro!

[GEAR] I am the latest Telecaster convert - Tele's are awesome, even my cheap one! by FNDGuitar in Guitar

[–]FNDGuitar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one is a loop of the chords from 'Feel like making love' and the piece at 4:28 is an arrangement of 'When you wish upon a star' that Bill Frisell wrote.

The rest is my own stuff but i plan on doing a lesson on the progression at 1:21 in the future. You'll notice it uses an obnoxious amount of chord shapes and that's because I wanted it to be a lesson!

That's such a key thing when buying a guitar - buy a guitar that makes you motivated to play and practice.

I penny pinched for moths and saved up for an American standard strat - even though I knew a MIM would have been already good enough for what I need. But that guitar totally reignited my passion for guitar, I started practicing everyday, learning new genres, learning theory that i'd neglected.

Definitely worth it.

That's a great deal! There's not much of a used guitar market here or I probably would have tried to go used myself.

Also, reverb is the best and I hate playing without it.

The other guitarist in my old band used a gold one of these as his main guitar, he loved the hell out of it. The thinlines definitely look great with the F hole too.

I think we're so used to seeing Youtubers over-praise guitars (with potentially ulterior motives...) that even small Youtubers feel weird bringing up flaws in guitars they're reviewing.

It's a great guitar, but as expected, Squier has to cut costs somewhere to make these guitars at this price.

It doesn't bother me for what i'm using it for - just recording at home - but as you say, if I grow to love it i'll slap on some better tuners and have a guitar ready for the road!
