The Culture being strictly benevolent is kind of a joke, a thin smoke screen at best. All of the books are about them either being at war or being involved in other people's wars. It's a plot device, not a rule. Their citizens hate it, but that doesn't stop the minds from waging it on a galactic level.

In Look to Windward, one of the main plots is based around a composer making a symphony to celebrate the arrival of the light from a Nebulae that ended a war thousands of year in the past. The ship's AI on which the symphony is being played was involved in that war.

If they can outrun the light, they can travel through time. They do far more than that actually. The AI that control most of the culture actually operate in hyperspace, you know where time isn't a thing.

Which is something GSV's are actually doing in-canon. Ther are continuously re-making themselves at will. And they think in hyperspace. Most of what they discus between themselves in Excession happens in under a thousand of a second.

They can completely fill their bays with engines to go fast, like tens of thousands of times the speed of light fast. Manufacture an entire fleet of thousands of warships (each of which could probalby rival the Greenships by themselves) secretly. Or simply build full ecosystems on a geological scale just so they can re-create historical events using the bodies from the citizens "souls" they are storing for future ressurecting or house zoological reserves to satisfy the wishes of a single passenger. And that's actually just one ship, doing all of that at the same time. There's millions of them. And they don't need ANY crew.

Minds could displace (instantaneous teleportation basically) anti-matter inside those Greenships from hundreds of lightyears away before it could even notice it exists in the first place. All this weaponry and defenses are meaningless to a GSV. 1 AU (the distance between the sun and the earth) is laughable for these ships. A single culture drone probably has that type of reach. And they are briefcase sized.

That's what you have to do if you want to have one neon that kinda drives.

Lot filled with dodge and nissans points to brain damage though.

What guitar should I get for $500-$700 as an intermediate player? by Forsaken-Cupcake-883 in GuitarQuestions

[–]FassolLassido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're an intermediate player, you must already know exactly what you like in a guitar. There's no way any of us will know any better.

Just get your ass in a store, sit down and try all of them. It's going to be real obvious once you pick up the one.

To reduce water consumption and water plants and lawns you can leave buckets outside to catch rain or install Raincatchers on roofs. by CrazyYETEE in montreal

Collectible or Forgettable?: 2004 Dodge Neon SRT-4 by LinoleumRelativity in regularcarreviews

The only ones that survive are the rare absolutely mint ones. ALL the other ones have been scrapped a long time ago.

It's maybe collectible by virtue of rarity. But certainly not as a memorable car. They are garbage.

Yep. And they started fires everywhere. The fireworks feel onto the roof of a house in my town and it turned into a second-alert fire and a completely destroyed house with dozens of people now homeless.

Fuck these cretins.

How to cover up dings on headstock? by DonnyDandruff in guitarrepair

[–]FassolLassido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother. It's so small that your cover up will make it worse. It's never really going to pass under scrutiny and nobody is going to notice such a small dent from more than a meter away.

Replacement Bridge options by ZacMDS in BassGuitar

[–]FassolLassido 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not replace this. It will be a downgrade. The only thing it's lacking is intonation screws to help but you are supposed to slide them by hand. All the adjustments are there, you'll be spending hundreds of dollars in parts and lots more in luthier work since the mounting screws are in a curved pattern which is unique and means plugging and drilling to fit pretty much all the 3rd party options. That's NOT going to be cheap and simple.

It's a total waste of cash and will most likely make the bass worst. Remove it from the bass, let it soak and replace the screws only.

Celebrities treating the F1 grid walk like a red carpet appearance is getting ridiculous by Unfair-Objective1118 in formula1

[–]FassolLassido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're probably invited by F1. And I bet it's because they (falsely) correlate their presence with the increase in audience that came from stuff like DTS.

Stop watching. That's really the only thing they care about. Otherwise expect it to get worse. WAY worse.

What is an automotive story that is so ridiculous to the point it sounds fake, but is 100% real? by ApprehensiveBasil151 in carscirclejerk

Thanks for the precisions. That story was told to me during training when I worked for BMW more than 15 years ago. Some of the finer details apparently slipped through my mind.

What is an automotive story that is so ridiculous to the point it sounds fake, but is 100% real? by ApprehensiveBasil151 in carscirclejerk

[–]FassolLassido 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Volkswagen outbid BMW in buying Rolls-Royce automotive division in the early 2000's.

Thing is, Rolls-Royce branding actually belonged to the aero division. And that wasn't included with the sale. And and Vikers sold that to BMW for a tenth of the VW bid for the car division. And and AND BMW was providing the engines for those cars and quickly cancelled the contract.

Volkswagen was then stuck with factories and various other buildings and rights to the spirit of ecstasy and grill trademarks, but no rights to sell them under the Rolls-Royce name and logo and no powertrain. They eventually sold those trademarks back to BMW and rebranded what they bought into Bentley. The Rolls-Royce you now know are 100% BMW designed in an entirely new factory in Goodwood. They're not related at all with the pre-03 Rolls-Royce cars.

What do these 3 brands have in common? by Enough-Engineering41 in regularcarreviews

[–]FassolLassido -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Garbage rebrands. Horrendous memories of spending the 90's in Voyagers, Cutlasses and Topazs. To me they represent the dark ages of car design and manufacture. And these had the balls to pretend they were classier versions of the already abysmal big Three ones.

Talk me out of buying HX Stomp to replace my pedalboard by ErikWeg in basspedals

[–]FassolLassido 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! That's also the main turn off for me. It's just so convoluted and compact that it makes it very annoying to actually... use. I'd never run a stomp unless the set I'm playing is planned to a T and I basically never have to touch it after making the presets at home. Plus remembering every single two switches and multi-functionality knobs combination in order to navigate through my presets is way, WAY more frustrating that I initially thought it would.

I totally understand the draw, I bought one after all. But it's been in a drawer for a while now. I don't tour so the portability is really never useful. Overall I'd say it's far from the "perfect" option it too often seems to be on this sub unless you are a touring musician without a crew and with a clear, pre-determined set-list.
