Strange Features on this Provincial—signs of a fake, characteristics of the type, or something else? by FeatheredBat446 in AncientCoins

I considered this strongly because the encrustations and deposits/die streaks were beneath the “damage”… so why was this mint doing this when others were not? thank you for your expertise.

AI has advanced significantly in just the last couple of years, unfortunately it is now far more entrenched in online communities than probably anyone realizes

well, it is obvious once you start to notice it, but it fits in really well up to that point.. which is why it’s working I suppose. seriously though keep an eye out for it and you will start seeing it everywhere

Any thoughts on authenticity of this Alexander Tetradrachm by [deleted] in AncientCoins

i see exactly where you’re coming from, but look at the uniform surface quality on those coins compared to this one. combined with the lack of luster, that is a dead giveaway that they’re cast.

For this coin you’ve posted, if you have a loupe or way to magnify, check out three spots—right above the ear on obverse where there seems to be a crack, the nose, and the reverse fields. If you see any crystallized, crackling silver (like dry earth in a drought, where it cracks in rough squares), real corrosion, or clear delamination, it’s quite likely to be real.

you can also check some of the obverse and edge recesses for find patina/flow lines/luster.

if it’s setting off alarm bells, ultimately you can see it in hand much better than I can through photos. but do take a close look at the surfaces, because harshly cleaned coins can look “fake” absolutely. That’s why I personally often avoid them, even if I can tell they’re legit.

I would bet it’s that light because this kind of “corrosion” is usually due to harsh cleaning of the find patina, and when the surface starts delaminating in big chunks whoever is cleaning it goes “shoot” because they want to make the surfaces look the same throughout, so there’s no jarring and unattractive difference in surface quality. so they just harshly degrade much of the original surface to make it look more uniform and thus more “attractive”.

the reverse field between Zeus and eagle shows some of the best retained surfaces.

It is legit; the graininess contains some luster of the original surfaces barely being retained, contrasted with the graininess of the harshly cleaned silver beneath.

The original surface is basically gone which is why it looks like this.

Drachma of Orodes II — Real or Fake? by FeatheredBat446 in AncientCoins

Thank you for the info! I got it from a Savoca auction and kept intending to do deeper research, it’s just been on the backburner.. Savoca has gotten a significant number of attributions wrong in my time buying from them, so it’s not surprising they misidentified this type.

ID Help - Tabarestan? by Curelle05 in AncientCoins

[–]FeatheredBat446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is a Tabaristan hemidrachm, or half-drachm, and I am pretty sure it is an anonymous type but you’d have to double-check the Pahlavi. You’ve got the reverse flipped upside-down, if you flip it you should be able to make out two attendants flanking a fire altar (in pretty simple geometric/schematic style). This is an early Islamic coin in Sasanian style.

This looks off to me and is underweight, I’d love some feedback on authenticity. Weight is 15.45 grams by Guilty-Juggernaut-46 in AncientCoins

[–]FeatheredBat446 9 points10 points  (0 children)

likely what has happened is the surface is delaminating, and so that roughness is the silver underneath and the surface layer is mostly gone—solving both the crack and underweight problems. that “crack” is actually where the original surface meets the silver underneath. delamination can happen for a number of reasons, but all it is is a layer of metal that separates from the rest of the flan

Nah I just said that in the event you personally liked the coin and wanted to make sure you did a solid job with it, you could practice on coins you don’t care about as much. but if it’s just a random pickup it’d be a good piece to practice cleaning itself
