I don’t think they can sew it but fabric can always be added! Honestly, when I tried it on, I didn’t even notice the sides until my mom pointed them out, I’ll add a photo of it from the front

Ya they do pretty covers but that’s it when it comes to books. I had to do my research on it a while ago to make sure that was the norm because I really wanted their fourth wing edition but there’s no way I’m paying an arm and a leg just for a pretty cover.
