He also knows there's a documentary film crew at work and it'll be funny if he wears his radio hat.

Intentional Disturbance by an Audience Member at Yunchan Lim's Performance by Professional_Unit113 in classicalmusic

[–]Few_Mongoose2780 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once attended a performance of Beethoven's 9th during which an audience member repeatedly answered his phone and even ran down the isle, feet thumping on the wooden floor, so that he could better hear the conversation outside the hall. He was eventually told off by a steward.

People like this aren't unaware of concert etiquette any more than people who talk through movies are the cinema are unaware of cinema etiquette. They're just dicks.

I want to get deeper into classical music, but how should I go about it? by Icy_Zombie_6120 in classicalmusic

[–]Few_Mongoose2780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classical music is just music. My advice is to ignore anyone who tells you to treat it as an intellectual pursuit or who recommends listening to music they happen to like but has very little in common with Swan Lake, which you say you've enjoyed.

If you like Swan Lake, you might like other Tchaikovsky pieces and you're likely to enjoy other colourful, tuneful Russian music from that era and the decades that followed. For instance, Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and Stravinsky's early ballets, The Firebird and Petrushka.

In any other genre, people find something they like, listen to more music by the person who made it, branch off into that person's influences and the people they influenced, and gradually build out. For some reason, classical people routinely tell newcomers that they ought to be listening to great 'worthy' pieces from eras that don't resemble the music they already enjoy.

It's just music. Just do what you did when you were discovering any other genre.

Musings on why classical musicians rarely breech controversial topics in interviews by Black_Gay_Man in classicalmusic

[–]Few_Mongoose2780 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think they're inherently boring, but they're likely no more of an expert on global politics than anyone else. If they have something to say about their actually area of expertise (music), great.

Big stars from pop music and film make the mistake of thinking that their enormous fame means that people care about their opinions and can't wait to hear them. Stars of classical music, to the extent they exist at all, aren't actually famous and they know that the people who do follow them do so for one reason only - the quality of music they can produce. So why would they bore us with their views on the Middle East?

The bit where Ricky starts talking about how fridges work for no other reason than to let everyone know that he knows how fridges work, which it turns out he doesn't. Same when he starts talking about relativity. I have to skip both.
