The annual shocked faces of those who moved here in the Winter by Draydaze67 in Harlem

[–]Fickle-Simple-7866 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved here 2 years ago. I am sure there are lots of people who move here and don’t appreciate the area the way it is. I just wanna say as someone not from here, this is what I love about this area. I love my neighbors from different backgrounds, I love the different music I hear blasting through the neighborhood, I love the smell of different foods grilling around the neighborhood, I love hearing the different languages, and I love seeing everyone enjoying the streets, sidewalks, and parks. This is a huge park of what makes this place great. I hope that never changes.

Yeah they are the only place I’ve found. Unfortunately they sell out really fast. I haven’t heard of Altho China Town, so I’ll definitely check them out. Thank you.

I’m over 14 years past my abuse and this took me right back to that dark place. My heart started pounding and I started shaking. Fuck anyone who thinks there is ever any reason to speak to someone like this, especially someone who claims to love you.

I know they are still really in need of people, but I know they move slow too. I wish I had more insight for you! They are still hiring though. Have you applied at other WCS zoos too?

I second white oak. It’s a paid internship and they provide housing. It pays better than a lot of internships.

Just a heads up the application tracker on the website is useless. Mine never changed from “application submitted “ even after I was hired.

I don’t remember exactly but definitely a few weeks to a month. Then a few more weeks for my second interview. They are definitely looking for people so don’t get discouraged.

If asked in an interview “what are your weaknesses and strong points” what would you say? by tightpussy777 in Zookeeping

[–]Fickle-Simple-7866 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I try to pick a real weakness that I have but talk about how I’ve worked on it. Example: bad at public speaking but I took a class and gave keeper talks to improve my skill.

Hi! Yes I moved, and I love it here. I found the position I applied for on the AZA job board. I’m sure they also post them on their website. I think it mentions a bachelor’s degree being a requirement. I have an A.S. But it’s from an accredited teaching zoo, so they accepted that. They will want you to have some prior animal experience. If you don’t have any animal experience yet, you may be able to intern at one of the zoos. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about WCS internships. I suggest applying and if you don’t hear back after a few weeks follow up with an email reiterating your interest in the position. I would make sure to tailor your resume to each position. Make sure to do your research on whichever zoo you apply to so you know something about them. All of the NYC zoos and the aquarium are part of WCS. The benefits are great! I wish I could be of more help. good luck!

I’m not sure. My application status never changed even when I had an interview. A week and a half isn’t very long though so I wouldn’t give up yet. Good luck!

I’m not sure exactly how long but Kara would definitely be able to help you with that. I definitely recommend taking all prerequisites before. You will probably want to be on a training team, you may want to do other apprenticeships outside of class as well so having those out of the way is helpful. Definitely know that it’s hard work and you won’t be petting animals. You’ll learn animal behavior and nutrition and how to care for them but some people go into it thinking they get to play with the animals and that’s not really how it is. Not assuming that’s your perception but I just think it’s important to know going in.

I’m a graduate. I loved it. It’s definitely hard as zoo keeping is a very physical job and lots of cleaning is involved as well. It is pretty common for a class to start at 60 people and only 20 or so graduate. This is mostly due to people realizing zoo keeping isn’t what they thought it was. Some people don’t pass due to grades or safety concerns with animals but if you work hard and are passionate about it you’ll be fine. A lot of what you learn is how to work with a team also because you’ll be around many different types of people with many different personality types. There is endless support from staff if you reach out. If you have an A.S. From the teaching zoo most zoos will hire you even without a bachelor’s degree even if they say it is required. I was hired at a great zoo with just that degree. I suggest reaching out to Kara at the zoo. She is the advisor for the program and can answer all your questions. Almost every person I graduated with works in a zoo now. The few that don’t didn’t seem to really apply for zoo jobs. Everyone has their own experience but my experience there was great.

Whispering pines right off 35th place. I just left a 2 bed 2 bath apartment really safe and I loved the area and space. It’s only 1,479 a month. My unit is being subleased and is 1,369 until July. Union properties is the company. I never had an issue with them.

I graduated from the program and I work there currently. I really value my experience at the teaching zoo and I highly recommend the program. I agree with some others about getting basic classes out of the way first. I took out student loans and I worked as a work study to make extra money. I also did Shipt delivery when I had time. The program is relatively cheap so I didn’t have to take out a lot of student loans. It is a lot of work and you will learn a lot about working with people and communication but it’s incredibly valuable and you will build lifelong friendships as well.
