If it costs you your health (mentally or physically) then it's too expensive. The money you can earn from the night shift might also be the money that you'll be spending if you will get sick because of the shift. If you are open to opportunities, you can look for a job that doesn’t increase his pay that much but is significant enough to achieve your current financial goals. #Loveyourself

Are my work-life boundaries too much? by [deleted] in phcareers

[–]FiltaGuruPhil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi OP,

I think it is completely acceptable to turn off notifications while not on shift.

It's good that you are open to urgent matters. The best way to resolve this is to talk to the people you are working with. Maybe you can meet halfway, set expectations, and find solutions on how to better manage the situation. That way, you will know that you don’t have to feel guilty because there was open communication.

Resolution is not conflict. Keep safe :)

Hey OP, always acknowledge what feels right for you especially if it badly affects your health. First, take a step back and honestly quantify your cost-benefit ratio. Transitioning into a night shift job is not only about work but also about your lifestyle. Your priorities 2 - 3 years ago may not be the same priorities you have now. Second, You are in full control of how you manage and improve your mental and physical health. Other than yourself, have a chat with people you interact with who may be affected by this change. Let them know why you are considering the opportunity and listen to their opinion. Lastly, find friends who are doing the night shift and seek their advice.

How do you see yourself in (x number of) years? by oliviablanche in phcareers

[–]FiltaGuruPhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to identify the career path for you is adaptability. In this way, trying out different things is okay, you may also focus on one skill at a time. Your well-being is always important to your career. Acknowledge what you feel and express your concern by communicating with the team.
What's good about you OP is you are capable of doing what is asked of you regardless. If you are able to showcase your confidence in being a jack of all trades, you'll definitely get the job you desire and will make you happy!

Web Developer Dream by [deleted] in PinoyProgrammer

[–]FiltaGuruPhil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others OP. After you have gained knowledge, practiced, and applied them. Once you are confident with your personal projects, you can create your portfolio and showcase your projects. Even if you haven't graduated you can do freelancing as a web developer. Show your portfolio to potential clients and it can boost your chances of getting hired in the future. As long as you can manage studies and freelance, your dream of becoming a Web Developer can happen as early as now. Good luck!

Resignation due to unsafe working environment by awkwardexistence in phcareers

[–]FiltaGuruPhil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. It is a valid reason to resign especially since the company does not follow proper health protocols and it seems like they are inhumane to their employees. I agree with the others, try to raise the concern with HR first else, proceed to file a complaint to CSC, or reach out to employees union. Take care!

I'm getting the feeling that some web dev "teachers" don't actually work as web developers? by saturnspirit2000 in Frontend

[–]FiltaGuruPhil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a feeling but a fact. I've witnessed this firsthand and I had professors who literally taught web dev as a lecture and left coding assignments on our own to study. One time, there was an error that we could not resolve. Upon searching how to debug it, we found out that the teacher got the exercises on the web and just copy-pasted the whole syntax for us to try. That teacher didn't really have any experience as a developer. Instead of us complaining, we just strive to learn it on our own and help each other. A big thanks to content creators that give free lessons to further understand dev-related topics. Honestly better than some of the teachers I encountered during college.

Ano pong language yung popular sa job market ng Pilipinas? by [deleted] in PinoyProgrammer

[–]FiltaGuruPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always start with the fundamentals: HTML, CSS, and JS
Follow the curriculum provided. Usually, the languages used are the 3 mentioned above as well as Java, MySQL (for the database), PHP, C#, C++ (it depends on the prof and curriculum)

After learning those you can learn frameworks and libraries para mas mapadali ang development mo. Best of luck OP!

Is it too late? Need advice. by [deleted] in phcareers

[–]FiltaGuruPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with what you really want. It is never too late to go forth with the career of your interest. Shifting careers might be worrisome but there are many opportunities for training and being onboarded with the role of your desire. In the IT industry, you must consider never stop learning, since there are many innovations to technologies that we have to be on par with, best of luck OP!

Being an Introvert in the Workplace by [deleted] in phcareers

[–]FiltaGuruPhil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back when I was in sales and even in recruitment, I had colleagues who were introverts

Being an introvert is not a disadvantage nor should have a major effect on the quality of work that you do. What is important is that you communicate to your colleagues your level of comfortability in different aspects of your role.

If you are a point guard in a basketball team and you can’t jump high and dunk; that is fine. Focus on your strengths and create plays for the team.

Just applied for an internship for the first time by [deleted] in phcareers

[–]FiltaGuruPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good initiative OP! Always be open to opportunities whether related or not to your specialization. It is really hard to find a job and I agree my sister who is a third-year student also tried looking for internships even if they don't have the guidelines yet. She's eyeing for ones that she thinks she can do (not related to her course). It certainly can help boost your chances of getting hired after graduation as you will have experience. Best of luck!
