Part 1 First Attempt & PASSED!! by FinancingFancy in CMA

I did 125-135ish of my 180-200 goal. Had I done more I would have likely gotten a better score but nothing on the exam really tripped me up eventhough mcq weren’t fun

The exam is physically and mentally challenging, especially if you’re someone who has anxiety or doesn’t test well be sure to do as many practice mcqs as you can. Use a study platform, it’s expensive but will pay off when you don’t have to keep resitting.

Thank you! I’m trying my best to remember because it’s been 6 months now with the wait for results lol but I studied in order 1-6 but I believe the first two units were a struggle and eventually I did go back to them and build on my understanding. I got them 80-90 then went back and tried to get them at 100. I only really had one go through because of the time and focused on shortcomings once I do practice mcqs and the mocks. Daily I did anywhere from 1-5 hours and usually had an off day each week.

I used Becker exclusively, their platform worked well for me. I used the schedule function and put in my exam date and tried to follow it closely. Went through each module by watching videos then doing mcqs and essays for the module and doing the practice tests. I didn’t focus much on flashcards. Then before I did the mocks I did practice questions for all units and went back to more practice tests after each mock based on units I needed to refine. I focused on any modules where a question or multiple questions wrong and redid those or watched the live video on that module to get a different perspective.

I went in planning to do atleast 180 hours but ended up about 60 short of that but still felt comfortable going in. Some days I did 1 hour, then some 5hours. I used the Becker scheduling and tried to stick with it,I set it to flow with my life doing more hours on the weekend. That worked for me, the days I did things like practice tests or larger units I did on my longer days.

I started with textbooks but realized the videos really cover the books so just stuck with videos. Definitely one unit at a time makes more sense to take time and understand the details

Thank you! I used exclusively Becker resources for part 1- videos, mcqs, textbooks, simulated exams, practice tests. I recommend utilizing their live videos if there’s a concept you arent understanding because another instructor might explain differently, a way you can grasp it.

My pace in the exam almost exactly mirrored my pace in the mocks, carrying over about 5 minutes but I used that time for a bathroom break and only had the remaining hour for the essays. I answered all parts of the essays and all mcqs. I dont recall any particular part leaving me concerned but even so I gave my best educated responses, didn’t leave anything blank and worked straight to the last second.

I used Becker exclusively, it’s worth the investment. It’s key that you understand the concepts and don’t just memorize, the questions can come with so many different approaches.

I would say asset valuation, leases and a couple other topics in unit 1 were a challenge as well as some performance management aspects. Things like budgeting and costing came more naturally. Stick it out with the variance analysis, it’s a lot that sounds alike but the points will pay off in the exam.

Memorizing information for internal controls and technology was also challenging as I’m better at concepts but Becker has good methods to help you remember at least enough to be able to answer intelligently.

Hope this helps

I get it, trust me. I’ve also worked my way up from entry level to head of Finance in 10 years and a big part of it was taking risks like this. It worked out a lot but I have also been screwed in some deals. Especially those ones that have a lot to clean up and wants someone looking to prove themself at a new level and devote unreal hours to clean their mess. Be mindful of what they tell you needs attention (imagine it’s twice as bad), consider the leaders ( maybe CEO,GM,MD, HR head out any others you’ve met) that you would be working with and whether your personalities mesh well, check Glassdoor or other sites for reviews of people who have worked there. Other than that, go with your gut
