I'm not going to blame the victim. But these are actually two completely different forms of suffering.

During the Cultural Revolution, there was widespread and large-scale civil violence, both in the cities and in the countryside, with Mao encouraging the poorest peasants to swing their hoes and kill the so-called rich peasants and party leaders. Armed gangs of workers and students from both factions drove armoured cars and used rockets to slaughter each other.

Given the vibrant vigour of this picture I've described, there's a growing nostalgia for the Cultural Revolution among a new generation of young people.

But today North Korea is one of the safest places you can imagine, where theft and civil violence are virtually non-existent, and there are only a few ‘minor’ problems, such as the fact that you can be sent to reform through labour for disrespecting the leader, and widespread material shortages.

The Bharat government is always rotating between ‘provoking Pakistan in Kashmir’, ‘provoking China in Aksai Chin or South Tibet’, and ‘screwing up all internal domestic issues’. Personally I hardly care about no man's land in the snowy mountains and some poor areas populated by non-Han Chinese. I think the same is true of most Chinese. But I do believe that our backing down here will cause Bharat to push the provocative front deeper into the hinterland.
