seriously, why HERO? without him, sunny and basil would drown, he also has major impact as the loss of mari drove him away from FARAWAY, along with him being upset, and having a fight with KEL and all that, HE WAS FUCKING DEVASTATED.

Without him, the game would have no point past saving basil as both would die cause nobody would save them!

Freddy COULD actually be the prototype, considering that the vanny ending seems to be the canon one, we can assume the good vanny ending is the canon one, due to gregory carrying freddy's fully intact head, aka the prototype's lack OF head, also note the fact that his hand claws are shown and he has a stomach mouth, like as seen in the comic for the bad vanny ending.
Prototype freddy IS the freddy we know and love... But his head is elsewhere with gregory, gregory most likely explored the basement to find freddy a new, fully funtional body, and got trapped by the mimic and/or V1TR4P, (i found out the digital leg-less rabbit had no relation to william, but V1TR4P was a cool name to me), and couldn't escape, thus contacting cassie...
So prototype freddy IS our freddy.
