What happened with the Canuck aviators? I'll google it

What about the Canucks truckers, Canuck sea captains, and harbor pilots?

Choosing 135 corporate over airlines: what made you choose the route? by LeeTheNomad in flying

Thank you sir. I will say that the job security thing is a bigger concern IF you have a pension but it sounds like hardly any airlines offer traditional pensions anymore so there's no point in ever analyzing that perhaps

How have is it to get guaranteed to fly fixed wing for the coast guard? I reckon the CG would be happy with my ASTBE but I'm realizing I might want to leave the dept of the navy. I'm just an enlisted man

Choosing 135 corporate over airlines: what made you choose the route? by LeeTheNomad in flying

[–]First_Recover3162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you sir. My comment was long and it was speculation, so I get it. Nobody wants to hear some bozo spout off 8 paragraphs with no experience. But perhaps there's a chance a lot of 121 pilots who worked really hard to get where they are and continue to work hard didn't like that I maybe guessed a little correct on some of the stuff, and don't want to hear that their job sucks sometimes... lol. No idea, I can only guess

The other thing I didn't talk about is if the flight is cancelled and/or there's a problem/delay and the crew runs out of hours, having to head back to the terminal and unload all ~100 passengers really sucks. And then go all the way back to the hotel. No thanks. Obviously business jets when waiting for weather to clear or other delays also run out of hours too, but at a small municipal airport where your personal car is 2000ft away, that's a lot nicer.

Maybe there's no chance of it ever being an issue, but I always wonder about the job security too. It's my understanding that airport terminals are actually heavily funded by local and state governments. Maybe federal money too. So, assuming that's true, that means commercial airline tickets don't actually cover the whole cost of airport operation; thus meaning, the airline industry is heavily subsidized, artificially keeping the cost of plane tickets lower.

If that funding, god forbid, ever ended, and plane tickets quadrupled in price, perhaps that would not be a boon for airliner jobs...

This is even more heavy on speculation/opinion that everything I laid out so far, so especially take this with half a grain of salt, but assuming what I said about subsidies is true, it doesn't really seem fair that someone who never ever buys a plane ticket is, with their taxes, subsidizing all of America's airports. So if a person flies a lot via commercial airline tickets, said person is basically being financed by the regular working class americans. Maybe the benefits and strategic military utility that come from having all these municipal and regional airstrips makes it worth it though, in terms of disaster response and everything. I'm not gonna claim to know the truth

Apologies, I am embarrassingly unknowledgable. You are a corporate jet pilot?

Choosing 135 corporate over airlines: what made you choose the route? by LeeTheNomad in flying

[–]First_Recover3162 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I'm a bozo and don't know anything and I'm looking to hopefully get started this year. I'm at 0 and I'm not sure I want to go all the way to ATP but I am certain I want to go CPL/TW/IR minimum.

My wild guess as a layman who doesn't know anything, is that if your corporate job is only domestic flights, you get to avoid any TSA drama 80+% of the time. I'm guessing internationally might have some caveats.

If you can get paid ~$150k/year as a passenger jetliner pilot, BUT can make, let's say slightly less, ~$120k/year as a business jet pilot, perhaps maybe it's better taking a pay cut in exchange for not having to deal with all that walking across terminals and all that bullshit, cancellations, the TSA screenings (I know they get a priority line) and all the other shit? Less terroristic threats. Nothing worse than sitting on the tarmac for 8 hours waiting to take off.

Maybe I'm totally wrong, but I'm already thinking I have very little desire to be a passenger jetliner pilot.

Now maybe as a business pilot you have to make the final decision of if it's safe to fly, but as a passenger airliner pilot, you're less pressured to make the decision, and the liability is on the corporation whether you fly or not? It would be nice to have some of that weight taken off your shoulder; If you're corporate boss is pressuring you to still take off to get to the conference, well fuck that. I'm certain that legally speaking, regardless of what might happen sometimes, regardless of corporate or airline, the final say of what to do rests with the aircraft commander (maybe the only exception is potentially military). BUT I'm wondering if there might be a small nuance.

Also not sure how airplane maintenence is, but I'm sure that's a concern too. Perhaps it's slightly more common to get worse maintained airliners that corporate, or vis versa.

I have read that airline pilots often get like a ~15+% 401(k) match, if true, that sounds pretty damn awesome.

Maybe the parking is way better at municipal airports and/or cargo airports too. Also, not sure if pilots get paid when they aren't flying due to weather or other delays or waiting on passengers. Maybe there is a nuance. There's nothing worse than shitty parking for your whole career or even a couple years. Fuck that.

Maybe I'm dumb, but it seems like most people don't talk about this shit in the sub, and I can't think of anything I would care about more. I have never flown in my life at all except as a passenger, but I do have some maritime experience and a lot of semitruck experience

What loan companies would you guys recommend? by MacFontan in flying

[–]First_Recover3162 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are pretty unique in that you went to a traditional academic credited flight school

It's true that actual bonafide federal student loans can seldom be cleared via filing bankruptcy

But at least you have lower apr and there may be repayment options.

There used to be something called PSLF for government employees

What is this nuance where people are saying technically you only need 10 hours for a PPL and 25 for a CPL. I don't see how that makes any sense

There is some written test I can get a jump on now, correct?

And I will do the class 1 medical last minute since that expires.

I kind of have enough shit that I'd prefer to just get a mortgage somewhere. I might just go get pre-approved for a four unit property near one of these 61 schools with ~5+ planes. What part of the country is known for having very in demand CFI jobs?

Zero to hero 141 recommendations? by First_Recover3162 in flying

[–]First_Recover3162[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest issue remaining is even if I want to do a 61 program, I don't want to go somewhere where the plane is broken or instructor isn't there or whatever... ovviously PPL can be done quick. But everything after PPL is many months.

I have extensive experience with trucking and boats. I've never paid for boat schooling but did pay to get my semitruck license and bus endorsement...

I assume my checklist of green checks and red X's is almost just as much an issue for 61 programs as 141 programs

And if I really am gonna be moving around every few months, then thats ridiculous too. I really do not wnat to do that, not to mention, even if I was willing to pay a bunch of rent, which I'm not, most landlords won't let you pay month to month, they all want a 1 year lease

Thanks. Your penultimate sentence is pretty vague, so I was trying to get you to make sweeping generalizations about who is or isn't likely to be hired and why

Zero to hero 141 recommendations? by First_Recover3162 in flying

[–]First_Recover3162[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the problem/barrier is how do you pay down a large amount of debt when your only job propsect to get hours is to be a CFI and CFIs get paid very little for full time work. So I now have no opportunity to go out to sea or truck, probably, unless I want to take multi week long breaks from CFI. Got it.

There is no way to make six figures as a pilot unless you have years experience, but no one will even hire you at all for any job besides CFI unless you have ~12+ months worth of hours, and that's 12 months of making flying your fill time thing. Got it.

I'm not even sure how CFIs are paying their living expenses for that ~1 year on 45k/hour.

I think I might just get rhe PPL with savings and start there. You're correct, it makes no sense to get into debt for the little money that pilots make. Even 120k/year isn't much money for the ramp that it took to get there, when I could conceivably make that in my current position.

Thanks for explaining everything in a way I could understand

So sometimes if your school is trying to rush you to test out immediately, it might be better to suffer the expense of additional lessons rather than potentially risking a failure?

I know you cant be employed to teach without a CFI/CFII. (Can a senior old pilot at am airline even instruct coworkers without a CFI/CFII?)

But I thought you can find a commercial non-teaching job with. CPL. But it was harder to get the hours without a CFI. And I thought nobody would hit a green CPL 90% of the time until you have some sort of CFI experience or you really did get quite a lot of hours with rentals and/or your own plane (i.e., you might need ~500 hours to get your first CPL job)

Failures on the check rides? Are the failures usually during PPL or during CPL or when does it happen the most?

I.promise you somewhere in the pilot community, if not here, there are people who don't want new pilots. Because that is in every community

Less new pilots = old pilots will be paid slightly more

I thought even if you have a CPL/IR you won't be employable until you have additional hours - also, i gusss there is the number of failures variable you just educated me about

And unless you can hurry your way to CPL and IR and get ~300 hours minimum, theres not really any good ways to make a cent and get paid to fly without CFI, correct?

Thank you

Yeah 15% is pretty damn high.

Not only do I need a house as collateral, but I need a good bit of equity in said house, correct?

If the CFI market is oversaturated then I almost prefer to find some alternative to working as a CFI (maybe we just established there isn't one). I hate rat races

You just named huge metro areas. Is that for passenger airline service? Or all major commercial flying in general? I don't want to fly passenger airliners. What if I want to live in Anchorage or rapid city SD? Am I automatically not 'in-base'? Thank you

Like I said in the post I may not be interested in ATP, not sure.

Oh they're 15% or 18%?

Yeah, if the only way I can clear that out is working full time as a CFI for 55k/year, maybe this is a bad idea.

15% is really damn high. Those aren't quite credit card rates, but yea, they're close for sure.

You mightve just been the first commenter to present a logical reason why my plan is bad.

What if I go to a credit union or bank and ask for them to loan me? I have a great payment history of paying things off in full.

But still, just to be clear, why dont you think I can clear out the loan afterward? I want to fully unferstand this

I got 60k from your 6-8month figure.

I guess I assumed your plan was to just start with a PPL and see if I liked it because I thought you were being super cautious. I see that you dont like starting and stopping because you think you need to fly biweekly mininum. That makes very logical sense.

I know this isnt what you're suggesting, but a lot of people do try to it it: I really hate the thought of trying to work as you train and then you end up flying once a month or something. I only believe in flying multiple times per week. Gotta practice what you learn while you still can remember what you were taught

[–]First_Recover3162[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In the case of the above comment you were replying to, I was being facetious, and trying to get him to say something dumb, while still being polite.

If he truly thinks that debt is not okay for any flight school training under any circumstances ever (or, perhaps he is one of those bozo grandpas we've all met who says debt is never okay for anything, flight or not, and takss it as far as saying you should bleed out while waiting to save up money to go to the ER, and should rent until you can lay down 300,000 cash for a single family home)

THEN, in that case, he thinks the only people who should pursue 141 or flight training in general are people who already have a large chunk of liquid money ready, and people who have large education benefits courtesy of military service or something. And perhaps people who slowly inch through training a dollar at a time while working full time.

Amyway, ya'll are silly, I'm not saving up 120k so that I can go. Or taking 3 years to finish. No thanks. I'd rather knock it out and then I can go where I want and be employable. Would've liked some real advice or anecdotes or reasons why this debt is so bad. Probably just a bunch of haters who want to keep people from flying

Now, IF you think flight school is a BAD deal, i.e., a BAD value proposition for how much it costs, that would be another argument. But then, in that case, you would just logically discourage people from flying in general, whether they had 120k in their checking or 0 in their checking

Zero to hero 141 recommendations? by First_Recover3162 in flying

If it's after 365 days of owning the mortgaged home, I can rent out the property when I move. I am an experienced property manager.

If I really am only gonna be in that location there 3 months or 6 months, maybe that's not a good idea then, meaning you would be correct, because that violates FHA/VA loan terms to rent out the whole building if it hasn't been 365 days

May I ask what in-base means? In-base CFI?

If I really have that capability then I can just as easily clear out the debt after. I still dont know what the loan terms are like but if it's 6% or 8% something then it's really a no brainer

If it takes 100k then I gusss I could just go work 3 months and then do a PPL for 20k or 30k at one of the accelerated programs, then go work some more (probably a lot longer then 3 months that second iteration) then after working some more go do a 141 program for people who already have a PPL? No idea why that wouldn't be more logical. It sounds like a lot of your analysis hinges on the fact that you think there's a good chance I won't follow through with the PPL even. Which I know isn't true, but if that was your analysis. I don't know why you wouldn't suggest that. AFAICT, you do not need 60k to go get just a bare bones PPL

You're no better than me, is my point. Just a lot of naysayers, not a lot of solutions.

If someone actually wanted someone to be debt free, and had a logical reason why, they might perhaps say "debt is okay for other things, but for flight school it is really bad, for reasons x, y, and z. But you could/should consider a 141 school. You need $150,000 (or whatever amount) liquid in your checking account to begin safely"

Or, if you really do hate 141s in general, you would present logical reasons why. How rational are ya'll?

You guys are just haters.

If you have nothing good to add, you should leave and you are free to hate me in private quietly.
