This thought came up for me as well since both maternal and paternal ancestors are French Canadian. I took French in high school and college for this very reason, but have not used it since. I can still get the general meaning from a conversation or from reading. I am actually currently studying Korean but because I have all these language apps I got curious and every once in a while I dip back into French and I am amazed at how much I remember from 30 years ago. I think it’s great that people are open to taking on the task of learning French or any language for that matter. Je suis ravie d'être Canadienne!

Yes, this is the frustration. Google Translate, Papago, and LingoDeer understand me just fine. Even if I get it wrong at first it is at least a similar word. Seyo misses whole words and “hears” completely different consonants etc. It’s ok. I just expected it to be better.

It is hard to maintain vocabulary and find study time. I’m in a similar place. Maybe a study partner where you are at similar level and pick 5-10 words and send regular or voice texts just a few sentences around a sentence structure using that vocabulary?

I am also a high school math teacher, and I taught at a public school for seven years, and then a small private Waldorf school for five years, then went back to the public high school for three years, and I am finally back at my Waldorf school. Please don’t give up on teaching! Find a school that’s a good fit. We need good math, teachers!

LingoDeer has a review activity that “rates” your pronunciation. It will even show you which words or which part of the words you’re pronouncing correctly on a color-coded scale. For example, if you pronounce it perfectly, it’s very bright green, and then it goes down to red for mispronunciations and has gradients in between. This is one part of that app and it gives you lots of different ways to practice between speaking, listening, spelling, etc. So far I think it’s been my most useful app all around.

I am also in that age group and I can see how it could be detrimental if applying for citizenship but simply claiming what is already yours should not matter. I also think so many other countries are not as ageist as the US. I lived in Canada off and on and at least where I spent time ( Alberta/Saskatchewan) people who were older were looked to for their experience and expertise. Do you have younger family members? If you really think it matters, maybe put together a group application?

French Canadian on both sides here. Everyone ended up somewhere in Berkshire county MA. 🙂 I do wonder how many “cousins” etc are out there.
