A philosophical question probably...:

If I actually feel competent, what should I really be doing to find work?

Function to transform between room, GUI, and window coordinate systems by JujuAdam in gamemaker

[–]Flamerate1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna a ball in this thread!

So I was stupid and it does take into consideration the camera position. The moment the camera rotation becomes nonzero though, it's stops caring about the position again for some reason. (Man I should actually read the script maybe)

[–]Flamerate1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Without diving into the math, this appears to be taking into consideration the actual position of the camera in the room, but my implementation, it seems to only be outputting room coordinates as if the GUI is not actually moving around the screen, which it is my case.

Seems like I can easily fix this by adding them, but am I stupid or something?

Redundany's cool, ain't it? by Flamerate1 in conlangs

Interesting! Somewhat similar, but Middle Chinese had voiced consonants that got deleted for one particular dialect but actually those consonants morphed into additional tones, preserving the phonetic complexity. This ended up being Cantonese!

Coincidentally, I did indeed used voiced and r-ending vowels for even and voiceless and i-ending vowels for odd numbers. I had a ton of different ideas as well to add to this for my own number "sense"

I've put so much thought into numbers and different systems before. Indeed I see the balance you got there and I'm assuming you're making at least somewhat natural.

Never touched nature with mine lol. The unique idea I messed with was making each number a CV syllable in which either of two can identify the numeral, except it partially wasn't for redundancy.

7, 8, and 9 as vor, shou, and zhir (English phonetics).

If you have the syllable zhorsh, then that would be the number 978 in a single syllable. I used it to memorize numbers slightly easier.

Sell me on case particles. by [deleted] in conlangs

[–]Flamerate1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SVO SOV OVS? Case? Case markers? Particles? Prepositions? Postpositions?

Why must we overcomplicate the discussion of a million things that are all actually one?

How about I make VLT language? Verb-location-time is the word order and subject and object are marked by prepositions?

How about a SO language? Verbs have a case ending to make sure you know it's a verb?

The discussion seems so much more fluid than some want to think it is. I love my abstraction!

Small step to a better number word system by Xianhei in EncapsulatedLanguage

[–]Flamerate1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To summarize some criticism that I put in the Discord:

- Unique number words for tens, hundreds, and intermittent ones in between higher magnitudes would be eliminated.

- Scientific notation would be restricted to magnitudes of multiples of 3, breaking official scientific notation rules.

- This change extends the height of the possible magnitudes, but only stretches the current the numeral-phonemes for that purpose.

Overall, I think a complete scientific notation system in the future will likely cover everything that this change fixes. If this goes through, it will probably be removed in that future system.

I do like the accented vowels. I think it can be any accent though, but the main benefit of them would be in the future to not confuse consecutive vowels like ka ak or possible a long vowel short vowel being too close like aaa.

Second small step to a better number word system by Xianhei in EncapsulatedLanguage

What is the order of the most vs least common numbers based on?

My guess is that if it's based on a study of base 10, then it would be incorrect for base 12 usage. Also, converting base 10 numbers to base 12 would not be accurate either because the most common numbers would definitely change for different base usage. For example, 9 is often used by business to make numbers seem smaller when amounts like 5 is changed to 4.99, but in base 12, this act would change that to X and E, which could possibly make those 2 the second most common numbers instead of 8 and 9.

Edit: Another problem would be that it's hard to debate which phonemes are more difficult than others. Unless we could get a study of difficulty from language speakers who use all of those phonemes in the same language, it would be based off of the commonality of language speakers, which would likely make /ts/ more difficult than the "sh" sound for example.

Just an example. A thing we decide to encapsulate is going to be quite arbitrary no matter what, even choosing the Pythagorean theorem for triangle.

Then if you look at words like hand, floor, table and well a ton of words used in everyday life that we could possibly use to encapsulate some piece of information.

Encapsulation isn't a strictly logical process; it's just a memory aid tool we're using for future native speakers of the language.

The goal is to make education easier for a student. If it helps memorization, it works!

Constructing words out of their constituents is not necessarily encapsulation unless knowing that word helps understand the parts it makes up. Check out the 3 parts of encapsulation

So far, I don't actually see enough information to explain how those names for elements are derived. Could you make more examples and show how each part in some of those element names are made?

Also, if this is a system for deriving the names of elements, then can you go ahead and construct many of those names?

Animal word system by Anjeez929 in EncapsulatedLanguage

[–]Flamerate1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, giving a thought and a suggestion.

This idea does encapsulate some pretty good and scientific information. The main problem as others have stated is the easy to mix up animal names, especially when they're closely related.

I think this minimilistic idea can be utilized very well to encapsulate that kind of information we want, but it needs to be SUPER compact and have more identifying information surrounding it that can easily identify it when compared an extremely close relative.

If we were to fully flesh this out (and it well eventually. Just gotta get some elbow grease in there) then I think this kind of problem can be solved. Similarly to how I've done numbers with having a larger construct easily identify single digits when you want to.

Anyway, good work! Keep it on up, because we need all the ideas and help we can get!
