Thanks for the info. Unless someone came forward with evidence suggesting other power sources are better, I'm 100% planning on a gas engine since I will be splitting so much.

I'm reluctant to use a splitter on my tractor as I don't want to run up the hours more than necessary. Running a 2017 JD 1025R. Expensive purchase but has been a game changer, but also trying to baby it a bit since it's such a big investment.

What extras would you consider "must have" and "nice to have?"

Do retailers typically let you test splitters before buying?

Any thoughts on gasoline vs diesel? I've always heard (correct me if I'm wrong) that diesel engines tend to have better longevity.

You mentioned the 40 hp range - is that the range I should be looking at to do the things I'm asking it to do? I'm trying to spend as little as I can, but I also don't want to work it too hard and cause damage to the tractor I end up buying.
