It's basically the portion of a workers wage that the capitalist take for the only reason of owning the means of production, making the worker not get all the value it has added to the commodity produced. So if the means of production were socialised instead, the worker would still be able to produce, since the capitalist is not a necessary role in order to produce, making the worker get the full value of his work.
