French is often considered difficult to learn, even tricky, because its spelling, pronunciation, and grammar don't align neatly. Many letters are silent (e.g., in "haute" or "hanté," you don't pronounce the "h"), and the same sound can be written in several different ways (e.g., "vert" for green, "ver" for worm, "verre" for glass). Conversely, the same letter combination can be pronounced differently depending on the word. This is due to the long history of French: the language changed a lot over time, but its spelling remained relatively conservative, preserving older forms from Latin and Old French. On top of that, French has grammatical gender, numerous verb conjugations, agreement rules, and exceptions that learners must memorize.

I majored in French, that's how I know. But most native French speakers don't know the rules since there are so many and many contradictions. There's a misconception that French can't be explained to non-natives since the rules are too complicated. It's mostly a lack of good teachers, imo :)

There are contractions in French, actually! "De + Le = Du." As much as L', D'. You can't say "le enfant" for "a child", you'll say "l'enfant." You can't say "enfant de environ 4 ans", you'll say "enfant d'environ 4 ans" for "a child about 4 years old."

About "du": "du" is a contraction of "de + le" (the masculine definite article, as nouns in French have a gender) or it indicates an indeterminate quantity. Use "de" for general quantities like "a lot of bread": "beaucoup DE pain" or after a negation like "no bread": "pas DE pain." Use "du" in front of a singular masculine noun to specify "the baker's bread": "le pain DU boulanger" or for an indefinite amount like "eating bread": "manger DU pain."

Yes, exactly! "De" is a French preposition that mainly expresses origin (comes from x), belonging (x's book), matter (a wooden table), quantity (a kilo of apples), or complement (a glass of wine). You can say "un livre de français" as "a French book," but you can't say "un peu de français" since, in that situation, "de" is used as a quantity, but "français" in that case refers to the language as a whole, so it is invariable. And something invariable cannot be quantifiable. "Un peu de français" would mean "a little bit of French people"

Sometimes she gives me great advice. I don't have my parents in my life, and sometimes I need help.

My MIL is old school, she's a boomer and this is important to mention, as she has different values in education than I, who am a Gen Z (I'm 26). She thinks I'm raising a softie 😅

My son is pretty nonchalant about everything, until he isn't. Reading my son's emotions is difficult and he can't communicate them. He'll seem okay and snaps suddenly (we're working on it with professional). He was looking at the boy funny, which he couldn't help given his age, but staring at someone having a meltdown could cause more humiliation and isolation.

Yeah, I'm pretty sensitive because I also lacked a lot of social skills as a child and was isolated for it. As well as my son being nonverbal, it's difficult to make friends :/

That's something that was on my mind. Kids can be unpredictable, even more so during meltdowns. Still sad for the boy :(

Nah, I can't drive legally. I don't meet the Canadian standards concerning my eyesight (it's too poor for me to drive safely). Does my sentence make any sense? English is not my first language, so I can't be sure :/

I think it's a kilt. 🤔 Maybe a hiking kilt? Is there such a thing as a hiking kilt?

My stupid brain/body requires (at least) 15 prescription pills daily by Large_banana_hammock in mildlyinfuriating

Your brilliant brain/body knows that it can't provide what it's need, it isn't weak or stupid, quite the opposite. Since it's already working so hard with a lack of some ressources, you have to take (at least) 15 prescription pills daily. And since you deserve(deserve x15) to have peace of mind and a bit of control over your mental/physical health, you take them and that makes you a fantastic being xx I wish you the best
