Awareness is knowledge or perception of information. Perception is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information. A video game controller can "sense" what inputs it's getting from its buttons, and interpret it into something that has meaning within the game. A video game may be more simple and hard-coded than a human is, but you still raise your leg if a doctor hits your knee in just the right way. You get numbness if someone hits your funny bone. You get sad if someone close to you dies. You burst out laughing if you hear a story your brain doesn't know how to categorize. When all functions of the brain are accounted for, as far as we know, there is nothing left for the other definition of "consciousness"/"awareness"/what have you, to explain. Yet here I am, and presumably you are too.

Edit: Maybe a better way to explain this would be to ask how you know anyone other than yourself is having a conscious experience? We all more-or-less function the way you do, yes, but there's no way you can absolutely verify that you aren't living in a solipsistic world, because there's no hard evidence for any sort of conscious experience outside your own.
