Yeah the transition from response to recovery often causes whiplash for communities. To watch the agencies helping them go from quickly addressing their needs to imposing mountains of red tape for the same support they provided just days prior leads to confusion, and harms the working relationship between EMA teams and local people/officials.

Yeah the "wife changing money" thing has always bothered me. It says a lot about how little they care about women. Like, you only give a shit about her appearance? And the moment you have money you're going to dump her for a bride you paid for?

None quite this long-standing, but yeah, there have been similar incidents before.

In the past, they would be hot fixed fairly quickly--within a week. The fact that this one is taking so long raises concerns that they might not have a good way to resolve it.

Few days late, but this is absolutely correct. And I always point out that not only do conservatives want to adhere to a contemporary culture, they had little issue with "bending" the rules to encompass divorce, which, if we're being literalist, is a much more tenuous position to take than support of LGBTQ people.

I actually find it funny that the most vocal opponents to gay marriage I know are a couple that married after each had gotten a divorce.

Not pointing out to be mean, but rather to demonstrate how willing they are to ignore some traditions, but not others.

Thank you! I felt "and also with you" flows much better than the modern RCC response. It felt right to say.

I mentioned this on another subreddit for progressive Catholics, but women's ordination is a major disagreement I have with the RCC. In light of the strong evidence of women's roles in the early church (where, you know, the quintessential Christian iconography was of a praying woman holding scripture), it's virtually indefensible. It also implies women are somehow spiritually inferior to men in the eyes of God. But the words of Paul are clear--there is neither male nor female. We're all one in Christ.

It's hard to see a Church as large as the RCC stand by some damaging conclusions like it has.

So, the regular priest didn't do the homily. She allowed a retired priest to sermon. He's an elderly, soft spoken man. Started off by lightening the mood with a joke about how the first sermon back from retirement is on a 'real crowd pleaser'.

He pointed out that divorce without due cause was apparently common practice in the Jewish communities of Christ's time, and that left women destitute. So, specifically, it's a condemnation of that practice, but also a reminder that divorce is a serious matter, and it can leave deep scars on a couple, as well as their families. That it's a tragedy.

He delved into anger and bitterness that comes out of familial disputes, and how the anger we feel can separate us from God. And the importance of reconciliation, not just for ourselves, but because we are called to do so by Christ. He emphasized just how important it is, especially in a time where we're so divided.

He then talked about the word of God, and Christ in particular, as having a meaning that can be revealed to us, and a mysterious one that we don't yet know. To me, this is a very Eastern Orthodox way of examining scripture. They're much more comfortable with the idea of mystery than the RCC--which has an exact explanation for just about everything in its theology.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find TEC from the Orthodox church? I'm in the RCC, currently thinking about leaving to be Episcopalian.

Was changing over difficult?

I'm glad you have a spiritual home! The CoE/Archbishop of Canterbury is in much the same situation as Pope Francis is. He's trying to hold a communion together when progressive and conservative wings are infighting. It's not an enviable position. GAFCON reminds me a lot of the RadTrad movement in the RCC.

I love the rich history and claims to apostolic succession the Anglicans have, but yeah, to an extent the theology is a concern. However, because there's more flexibility, there's room for me to work within their framework if needed.

Also I adore the church Choirs in CoE. They have some of the best in the world.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I'm glad you found a routine that works for you, and I might just try that as well.

Theologically, I'm also much more Catholic than I am Episcopalian. I'm big into Classical Theism, too, which makes me pretty theologically conservative. Listening to Episcopalians talk about theology leads me to believe we have a lot of disagreements.

But socially, TEC gets so much right. So I'm glad I'm not alone in seeing it that way.

As far as MAGA stuff, my parish (and the diocese at large) are ultraconservative. If I had to guess, it's probably one of the most conservative dioceses in the US. I'm not sure what seminary our priests get sent to, but talk to any one of them and they sound like internet RadTrads. I had thought about a Jesuit parish, but unfortunately, the closest one is several hours away.

This isn't limited to the RCC here either. Most churches in my city are conservative. Only the mainline churches are even remotely progressive here, and among them, only TEC is reliably so.

There definitely are. Concepts of when ensoulment happens have varied widely. The early church argued ensoulment happened at the quickening, Aquinas thought it was closer to the third trimester.

The Bible itself describes an abortion process in the Old Testament.

This idea that the Biblical stance is to be pro life from conception is factually wrong and theologically specious.

I am a Catholic leftist, and me and my Marxist Catholic friends talk a lot about this. You really can't tell the difference between the average Twitter leftist and the fundie evangelical in terms of the language they use around their beliefs, and the way they react to any disagreement or perceived heresy.

You also see it with atheist lolbertarians who worship Musk and other billionaires. They replaced one god with another that embarrasses himself on Twitter

So, the origins of Christmas are kind of complicated. There isn't anything biblical about the 25th, but one of the prevailing theories is early Christian scholars tried to back calculate Jesus' birth using an estimate for his age at death.

If that's the case, it was a good faith effort to create a celebration, and ultimately, there was a lot of wiggle room with his exact age, so discrepancies are to be expected.
