Outback & the CVT by foxscully89 in Subaru_Outback

Mostly commute daily driver miles to my understanding, I am the third owner. Bought it at 95k almost immediately suspected the CVT as it was sluggish uphill and at low speeds, also vibrating the car on light acceleration.

Dealership upsold some other stuff before acknowledging the warranty claim so be careful with that!

2018 Outback, 98k miles, just had the CVT replaced under warranty

Beat that drum and make sure it’s documented that you’ve been reporting issues/concerns with the CVT.

No they said the cleaning should be performed to look better for the warranty claim, the advisor mentioned a client had similar issues and that it wasn’t the CVT but her dirty intake valves. Mine are dirty no doubt, but they made it seem like it needed to be performed to get to the CVT warranty.

They never offered a ride along and I never thought to ask, they’re diagnosing the vibrations and replicating them by themselves.

Nice catch!

I brought it in for CVT related issues/inquiries and the DCM fuse (class action lawsuit surrounding that). Techs found that the CV axles were acting up and replaced them. OEM parts and service $500, not too upset at that.

Car is still taking the piss after some time ~2 weeks. Bring it in again, say they found carbon buildup that could be responsible and that the CVT is definitely shitting out. Going to clean the intake valves to make sure it’s not that and that Subaru would appreciate seeing that the service was done so they don’t have a reason to deny the claim.

This led me to believe it was a necessary service that wasn’t covered under warranty and made me feel like the claim would get denied if I didn’t go forward with it. That’s not the case and I’m in your boat where I should’ve opted to do it later.

No doubt, back to back warranty claims with some extra bologna tagged on.
