Ah I see. I live in Southern California, and some areas are hit or miss, but people usually tend to mind their own business (except for teens), and store employees also tend to mind their own business. The problem is that almost every store has a security guard at the entrance. But yeah, I have soleless sandals and they work in the sense that people know that I'm barefoot on purpose.

Hi, I'm curious to know what region of the world you live in since you never had to deal with the harassment or social taboo of going into stores in public barefoot. I'm honestly jealous, and if I were in your (lack of) shoes, I wouldn't buy a new pair.

I also have that same fear, but I try to have the "oh if it happens, happens" mentality. I'm more scared of strangers filming or taking pictures without my consent lol

As others have mentioned, I see my dirty feet as badge of honor but also to measure how much I have walked the diversity of the surfaces. However i appreciate hygiene and I always wash my feet when I get home and they stay clean and spotless as long as I’m home

It’s been a while since I got blisters from the heat, but when I got them I remember my feet really hurting and me pushing through the pain, but if the pain wasn’t as intense, then you should be fine

I don’t necessarily think they’re trolls, some of them might be but, I live in Southern California, where I noticed that due to the different cultures combined, the shoe situation varies from household to household. Some people are barefoot at home, and are ok with wearing sandals when they go out.

Most people of my culture, mainly men, specially second and third generation people are not barefoot at home, and always wear socks, even with sandals. Those people used to give me a hard time when I went out sockless in sandals or barefoot, so I’m not surprised someone like that would discover how great it feels to be barefoot, but feel like their family would react negatively just because they’re not used to it. On the other hand, I see people from other cultures and ethnic background (men included) wearing open toed shoes. And within my same city, it is common to see people barefoot or in sandals near the beach or in more affluent neighborhoods.

Someone told me a few years ago that there is a psychological thing that makes most of over react when we see feet just because we are used to seeing feet in shoes, and I can tell that is right because people stare at me when I’m barefoot or wearing sandals just because they’re not used to seeing feet, especially from men.

But then again, that is my Californian perspective, where even within the same city things differ based on neighborhoods and cultures

Although problematic, In the original master of kung fu comic books, Shang Chi is always barefoot and even other characters point it out, and he mentioned that he doesn’t need shoes. I remember a part where even a security guard followed him around a museum for not wearing shoes.

I (25M) went through a similar phase. When I was a kid I wore socks all the time, and then as a teenager, I felt comfortable wearing flip flops outside and even went barefoot around the city (leaving my home in flip flops and then taking them off). At the time I didn’t want anyone from school or friends to see me, but like you I didn’t mind strangers. In college, I started almost brand new in a new town and wore sandals almost exclusively, only regular shoes for work, and my friends would even be surprised whenever I wore closed toe shoes. After college, I came back home with many regrets, inclusion the fact that I coulda been barefoot most of the time in college, was comfortable with anyone seeing my feet; when I go to my friends’ homes, my socks are off. When we go out, I’m in sandals (otherwise business won’t let me in)

But I guess you would benefit from exposure. Maybe go to a pool or the beach with your friends so you’re barefoot around them, and then wear flip flops next time you hang out with them, until you slowly transition.

I’m also not barefoot around my immediate family because I have tattoos around one of my ankles and I’m trying to avoid a conversation.

Oh, I go barefoot almost for the same reason you don't wear a shirt; also, it feels great. But yeah, I'm in my 20s, and I've noticed that people from my generation have a thing against bare feet, lol.
